Noisy speedo head..

My speedo head makes a clicking noise whilst driving along the road and is very annoying. Everything works fine but the speedo is original and is showing 87000miles so i dont want to change it for a new one or one that shows mega miles. Any quick fixes to quiet it down?

disconect the cable from the gearbox and the milage will stay 87000 to  

It could be due to an old/faulty speedo cable: try driving without the speedo in place, to confirm if the cable requires replacement (NB: driving without a speedo is illegal, so be careful/do it in a private place).

If the cable is ok, the tip will turn steadily and fairly straight and, if you hold it between your fingers as it turns, it should feel smooth, not jerky.

If it's ok, try smearing a SMALL amount of grease over the tip of the cable before putting it back into the speedo, but if it's still noisy, you might have to get it repaired at a car instrument specialist - ads towards the back of classic car mags…
