fuel pump relay help

had a nightmare last couple of days, my 1.8 gti cab broke down while stuck in traffic a couple of days ago, got it back etc and tried to find the fault. noticed i couldnt hear the fuel pump priming so i check the fuse, which was corroded so i replaced it…. still no joy
so i thought perhaps it was the fuse board corroded as well so stripped down the dash and changed the f/box…..still no joy
tried another relay ( but cant vouch for its state ) ……….still no joy
tried the bypass with the relay off and pump primes

is this a relay fault ? will changing relay for new one fix fault as it seems strange that the fuse corroded and the relay went at the same time, and other relay didnt work ( the car it came off was a bit finnicky with the fuel pump coming on anyway.  have noticed wire for dashlights has melted ( a while ago )

any ideas people  :dontknow:

Have you got an immobiliser fitted? I'm having the same problem think its that, but i can't find it to bypass it.

Could i bypass my immobiliser the same way as liam did in the thread? ie. a wire from battery to coil?

Cheers

relay

cheers rich for those links, i had read the first one  already but the 2nd was useful as well, i think i'm gonna try gsf for a new relay as i had the dash out today and replaced any dodgy wiring and made sure everything went where it should do ,but still no joy…..
one thing , my battery has taken a pounding the last few days drained it etc but still turns over enough to start it with the relay by passed, but it doesnt so may try jumping it before setting off to get the relay
will let you all know how it turns out

still nothing

tried jump starting it today, with the fuel relay bypassed, engine turned over okay and could hear the pump priming but wouldnt start

surely a corroded fuse wouldnt lead to all this ???

going to double check all the wiring again but it should have started

no spark

well today was spent removing any trace of the old immobliser and making good the wiring ( didnt check on the ignition barrel  :banghead:  ) charged up battery,  bypassed the fuel pump relay, turned her over……still nothing

found out i now have no spark at the ht leads or from the coil ( this was all working fine up til i broke down a few days ago)

perhaps there is still a unconnected wire left over from the old immobie that needs to be reconnected or earthed

any ideas   :dontknow:  :dontknow:

anyone

You can BUT  the coil runs at  a lower voltage so ….Try it then for a few moments then if it works get in to the wiring and remove the immobilzer .

fuse boxes

just had a thought , i changed fuse boxes

Q. are there any differences in fuse boxes, apart from the relays which go on them   ????
i couldnt see anything on it which differed to the other one and everything else works fine
going to strip the dash again tomorrow and see if i have missed anything

no joy still

cheers rich thought they were the same

stripped the dash again today and the ignition barrel, found nothing astray

changed coil………nothing
ignition  switch unit swapped …..nothing

what else can cause no spark at the HT lead and to cause my fuel pump relay not to work  :dontknow:

I think you need to trace the wiring back from the coil - you should have 12v at the coil with the ignition on.

Use a multimeter and keep trying the wiring working back to the ignition switch and then the fuse box and eventually back to the battery - check all the earths are good.

Use a good wiring diagram whilst you do it.

Eventually you'll find somewhere where the 12v is not getting through.

Let us know how you get on

???

has the gti got a condensor ?
if so where ?
if not whats it got in its place ? as i have read thru so many articles etc and my old haynes doesnt cover the 18gti as well as it should ( for all you people that read it like the bible take note    ) but does suggest my problem, if on a Gl , would be caused by the condensor in the distributor

come on rich you know this one
by the way got any vent sets left ??

Hi,

No condenser on 1.8 Gti's - there is an ignition control module in the scuttle panel - black block screwed to a heatsink on the passenger side.

And yes I have dask vent kits - check out www.golfmk1.co.uk

FIXED, 4 those with fuel/pump, ignition probs

CHEERS Rich you where right had to check the ignition working back from the coil and the cause ( i think ) was a earth not connecting proper on the two round earth terminals  ( next to fuse box ), cleaned it up etc and she fired up first click, also put the fuel pump relay back in and that works fine, so it looks like one bad earth can cause the whole ignition system to fail
was good to get the dash apart and clear up the old clatter of dead alarms/old speaker wires etc and to wire up the original 4 speakers

so for the many people that are having starting problems ie have no spark and fuel pump not priming etc, do what crazyquiff says and check the  feed starting from the dizzy and work back from there

good luck all

thanks

???

same thing was happening to mine , bypassed the relay and the pump would prime, but car wouldnt start, which is why i first thought of the relay or pump but couldnt start it until i traced the bad earth

The reason the pump didn't prime with the relay is that the relay takes a feed from the coil so the pump will cut off if the engine stalls - i.e. in an accident

If you do not have any power to the coil then the relay and pump will not operate too.

Bypassing the relay gets the pump running but there is still no pwer to the electrical side.

Glad all's running now

Sorry to jump in but, I'm on with my wiring at the moment, trying to trace where everything goes so i can loose my immobiliser. My question is, I have the brown Haynes manual, are the wiring diagrams for a 1981 Golf & Jetta (page 305-309) what i should be following for my 1982 GTI?
I just wanted to check before I really get stuck in.

Thanks
Dave

red

i am sure the haynes book you need is a red one, although everytime i read them books i dont understand them

it would be quicker and cheaper for me to type a lot of gibberish and you to say

'' f..k, how you supposed to understand that ?''

i would spend the ?15 on a multimeter…it would be of more use
if you already have one…air fresheners, car mats, furry dice
