fog light switch wires

can anyone tell me what colour wires do what on the back of the fog light switch on a 88 gti cabby, i have power to blue/grey wire when i switch on my headlights but nothing from any of the others, brown is obviously an earth, but i have 3 more =1x yellow/grey, and 2x white/grey that im not getting any power from. :dontknow:

grey/blue and brown is just the feed for the little bulb in the switch so ignore those.

83 - grey/yellow - power from headlight switch
83a - white/yellow - front fog power (if fitted)
83b - grey/white - rear fog power to rear fuse above fusebox

I dont have my mk1 haynes to hand but looking at early mk2 the fog power input comes from M/1 on the back of the fusebox, which in turn is fed from A/9 on the fusebox which in turn is fed from the headlight switch.

follow the wire from pin 83 on the switch all the way back to where it comes from hopefully there will be something obvious there

cool thanks for that matey, from what you have said the only power i have is for little warning light and even that wont come on, i tried another switch but nothing on that too, i will put tester on points at box as you described and if no joy i may well just run a new feed to switch, would the feed from headlight come direct from box or from the headlight switch itself.

The feed comes from the fuse box.
As Johnny states it's fuse is in it's own holder above the fusebox it's self and not on the main board, have you checked the 10A fuse, to see if that's gone? Plus these have a habbit of water ingress and the bulb holder terminals going cruddy, try cleaning these up too.

yes mate i have checked the 10amp fuse that lives on top edge of fuse box also checked the fog light itself but thats fine cos sealed it all up with self amalgamating tape after last mot, i think its pointing towards a power feed prob and not equipment failure. thanks for help.

no worries then, but those are the things I would check, dirty connections are a nightmare.
My horn stopped working and all it was the old relay  contacts were really mucky, so quick rub down with some sand paper cured it.

I think this pic will help

the light i meant is for the dash lights on bulb, not the warning light ;)

the warning light will only come on when the rear fogs are switched on

just had a look see and i dont have a wire on that connection point, so more looking needed, would you happen to have a picture of the other end of the fusebox would you, i have a grey and white wire at the other end thats connected together via a male and female connector, not sure what that does but if i connect it to the point on box you show then the warning light on fog switch lights up.

the grey/white wire is the rear fog light output as poer my post above, the warning light will light up if you put power to it becasue its on the same feed as the rear light. you now know at least that the grey/white wire back to switch is ok! now you need to find the yellow/grey and plug it in :)

start at the fog switch and follow the grey/yellow

hello i am new here i will introduce myself on the other topic.
I open this old topic because I have exactly the same problem, may i ask which wire it was?  i have no power on my rear fog light and i have no power on both wires from the top fuse, where do i start?  I also have no power on any of the wires of my fog light switch (except the grey/blue for the lighting switch light.
This is the one without front fog light and its the mk1 golf  GTI 1983, I have several books with small wiring diagrams but all the colors don't match.  when I read this topic it seems exactly the same wires as my fog switch, Anny idea?

 Thanx a lot Paul
