I never found out why the fault occured in the first place, but it didn't give me anymore problems in the 8 years I had the car.
Try checking the earth on the back nearside corner off the rocker cover before you start pulling things apart

you are bang on this is a very common fault . i come across this fault a lot of the times. the repair that you have done is one that i do all the time
the fault lays from the earth block just on top of the fuse board which feeds the earth to the clocks .
