1984 Golf GTI Convertible Spec

Post

I have a 1984 mark 1 Golf GTI convertible uk registered and I am desperately trying to find out the original spec of the car so I can take it back to it’s original spec. I was informed when I took ownership last year that it was a limited edition model but following countless internet searches I can’t find out any more. It has a white hood, white paintwork, white wheels and a beige leather interior with black dash. 8B4F507B-2951-4B8B-B945-5BA1759D63BD.jpeg 13AF5ADD-D0C5-4807-9B18-3761CBB2F9FF.jpeg any advice or pointers you could give me would be appreciated.  Thanks :-)

Hi and welcome.  It looks very much like the all white edition however the bit that is unusual is the beige leather bit. They normally came with leather bolsters but white pinstripe cloth trim .

Interior could have been replaced at some time as it wasn't that hard wearing. post up some pics of the seats.

first All whites came out in  late 1983, with the wheels yours has, then later in 1985 with different wheels see brochure link below, and then finally as part of the quartet editions where you could mix and match colours and create an all white on if you wanted .

Look pretty much standard spec how it is..

It's very tidy has it been restored?

Your interior should be the white version of this

Unfortunately all white and all black interior is extremely fragile so you are highly unlikely to ever get a second hand set worth buying, retrim only if you want it original.

Apart from the interior it looks as if everything else is as it should be, how are your door cards, I've seen these pop up on ebay a few times

Check out www.cabby-info.com as she has a heck of a lot of Cabriolet stuff there, including interior style photos by year, and sometimes country.

The only way to be sure is to look at your Build sticker to see what the car came with, located in your boot, on the Cross member between the strut towers.

Other than that you can contact the VW history Museum to purchase your build sheet that may list what you have purchased by vin as it was rolled off the assembly line.

On cabby-info.com as well as here the M-Codes on your build sticker details what options that you have originally.

We call the Triple Whites over on this side of the pond, or Triple Blacks…..  I will tell you after owing 3 of these with white tops… the First Triple white I had I changed the top over to black.  The 2nd one I have is still white and a pain in the assets to keep clean, but the 3rd one my baby, I changed from a white interior and white top to Tan and Tan Canvas….

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

And this is the exact reason why you dont hear about many white or black models.

There is quite a few more of them in existence than people realise but there are either

A) Not actually all white or Black anymore

B) Not advertised properly because people either dont realise what they are or because over the years bits have been changed dont think they can me them models

Pictures of the interior, reading everyone’s replies (which I am entirely grateful for  - thank you) it would appear that the seats and door cards have been replaced at some point. Would really like to get it back to it’s original state. Anyone know of any one who specialises in re-trims?

The exterior is in good condition - original paint and engine is fine, low mileage, Previous owner kept it off the road for a large part of its life.
thanks again for the responses, really helpful 😀 7ED4DA10-563C-456E-8C98-F64A1FD4F5F9.jpeg ECB09ACE-C383-40F5-A9EC-44E6C9315483.jpeg 2394E909-A5F6-4898-BEFA-D0D19286191E.jpeg

Your chairs are pretty nice even if they aren't what it left the factory with.

I'd probably pick up some beaten ones, gather foam cushions from passenger seats so they are like new and then present them to a trimmer, sell the old ones to make some money back. You'll be looking at the best part of a grand!

Where in the country are you?

The seats etc look to be in great condition, if I was you I would find another complete interior and get that re-trimmed then sell the complete leather interior, looks like it's come from a Rivage and they do sell at a premium as it was an option when new so not all cars had it fitted…. That is if the seats etc are leather?

See if anyone breaking a car has a complete set.

The main problem you will have is getting hold of the original material as I think is no long available..?
