Soooo, looking through the history the plate is relevant to the first owner who sold the car with it on in 2015. Someone else has had the car for 5 years with it on and he traded it in at a garage recently and I bought it (my point here is that no one seems to have any interest in it)
I wouldnt mind selling it as it looks like it might be worth a few bob, so if I just do the remove plate from car exercise on the dvla site, does this mean that it will go on retention in my name as the current registered owner? Or do I have to claim ownership of it another way as of course I don't have any paperwork for it (grantee stuff or whatever its called)
Apologies for bothering you lot with this but I couldn't seem to see a definite answer online and can't get thru to dvla on the phone.
Cheers all

I think it will then remain on retention for 2 years and then there is something like a £20 fee to keep it there.
Depending on what it is you can look anywhere from £100 to say £500 for it assuming it’s nothing too special. If it was the trader would have sold it themselves.
You should be able to do it all online
Thanks

Its P4 PJO, not expecting fortunes for it but does seem a shame to just let it go which I assume is what will happen if I assign the Mrs private reg to it. If no one wants to buy it I could always re assign it from retention to either of our cars if and when we sell to make them a smidge more appealing to buy.
Thanks again!

Also with a private plate like that, that doesn't mean anything to me or could mean the something that I don't like and may require hassle/£ to remove would put me off buying a smidge, rather than making the car more attractive

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

It may be possible to remove the plate online in which case its simple and you should receive the number online and a retention certificate in the post. You can then use the certificate to allocate it to according the DVLA rules. Retention now lasts ten years without the need to renew.
If however you are unable to transfer to retention online its back to the postal system. You will need the correct application form, the V5c (take a copy) as the original will go to DVLA. You will also need a cheque or postal order. As a footnote to this inform your insurance company. Do NOT sell the vehicle until you receive a new V5 as you will lose the plate. Be prepared to wait

Thanks for the tips all, I've paid my 80 and its now on retention so all good. Not really fussed if it takes ages or doesn't sell, as nice to have for the sake of 80 quid rather than it vanishing into the ether when my mrs added her own private reg to the car.

Good luck with sale
I did buy JU51 DUB for my Polo 6n2 GTI and let it go with car to avoid the hassle. A couple of screws and had the Nike IT/Tick graphic it was pretty decent (Just Dub It) - remember someone at petrol station asking me how much of a fortune I'd paid for it…they were a bit shocked when I said £250 from DVLA
Still on the Polo but that hasn't been MOT'd for 6 years now
