Reconditioned Engine
Currently looking for a 1.8 reconditioned engine for my mk1 golf cabriolet or anyone who can recommend a good service who will carry out this work on my current engine. Engine is beginning to give a slight knock so I'm beginning to think either head gasket or piston rings. Always knew when I bought the car it may need work but it's a project now so hoping anyone with more experience than me on here can point me in the right direction. Cheers G

You might be looking at new main and big end bearings, rings probably worth doing but you won't know for sure until it is inspected. A straight forward rebuild might be £700, maybe more if you need a crank regrind and a head skim. Haven't seen many recon engines for sale. If you are handy with spanners and have a Haynes manual it's not a difficult job if you take time over it. A lot of folk are put off engine building but it can really only go together one way. Machining work will require a professional.

I'd love to have a go myself but unfortunately with my line of work I can be extremely busy. I'm based in Stoke so I'm currently searching for reputable companies and have found some already. If the jobs are small I'll have a go but to refurbish an engine sounds very scary so we'll done you o. Your project it looks amazing on the threads.
