Help ordering the right key please

Post

Hi,
I'm looking to get a new key cut so I need to buy a blank. I found 2 types… a HV profile and N profile. Both pictures look like they have the same grooves and I think they've used one picture and listed differently.. I've read a post that said the profile changed sometime in 1986 and typically my car is '86.

Here is the pic I took yesterday. Any advice would be appreciated.

Year an model tells us more.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

According to every thing I know, it should use an HV key blank.

but:  Love those buts.

The former owner could of replaced the older type of ignition switch for a newer style that uses the AH blank.

If the Ignition key also works the trunk lock or the Glove box, then you can be sure that it is probably a HV blank.

Big thanks to you both 👍

I'm pretty sure it unlocks the boot from what I remember before I stripped it off, haven't checked it on the glovebox yet but will check that out next week before I order one.

Thanks again

Glove box lock is very very easy to change so don't just check that, door locks should be the same as ignition, saying that door locks are only 2 screws to remove or early cars are only 1 screw

Thanks for the help.

Just asked boyfriend and he said it definitely opens the boot and doors. Also just realised it has to open everything because I only got 2 keys with the car and the smaller one opens the petrol flap 😊 I'll order the HV and hope it's right 👍

HV is correct up to around 1987, then they switched to AH. both basically the same except for the extra groove down the side on HV but it doesnt actually make any difference an AH key will fit an AH lock barrel and vice versa.

N profile is not correct for a Golf, its for Transporter and others

That's great because I ordered the HV. Just waiting for it to arrive then I'll get it cut 👍
