Engine Swaps

I was curious about swapping my engine from stock, and wanted to chat about possible replacements.
Hi all,
I'm curious what everyone thinks about the various engine swap possibilities with a Mk1 Cabriolet, and which options are the best?
I have been looking at the 2.5 O7K and it piques my interest, but I know there are cool TDI swaps and easy bolt-in options like the 16V. I currently have a stock 1.8 4-cylinder, so this engine swap would be down the line, but out of curiosity, which would be worth it? Is there a consensus on if there is a best option?
Is more power worth it, or should I err on the side of ease?

Settling In

Hi. I have been through the same thought process.
A mk4 golf GTI 1.8 20V is a relatively common swap, tuneable for high horsepower.
I bought the donar mk4 golf and did not transplant the engine in the end. I feel like it would have ruined the character of the MK1.
Given unlimited resource I'd probably go down the crossflow (beetle) head route with twin carbs paired with a fast road cam.
If you want a fast golf, I'd probably not start with a cabriolet, just my opinion of course.
