Decisions.

So my 1.6 GTI. will be 40 years old November next year. Will it go up in value for hitting that milestone?

Why do I care.  Well a change in circumstances mean I have to move home and will no longer have a garage to store it in. Cost of storing it is about £80 per month which although doable prevents any hope of saving the money needed to get where we need to be in 2 years. Essentially I will be saving about 3-4K less per year than I need to between different home and car spending.

So do I sell it knowing I will never afford another one and certainly not one in the condition mine is or one I know so well.

It owes me about 9k and dependant on the buyer could fetch me anywhere between 6 and 12k. Or a cool million in car and classic

Anyway do I tough it out and store it outside for 2 years or let it go to a safe pair of hands that will keep it dry and loved.

Responses on a post card but may have to let my one dream go.

Alternatively anyone know a museum that wants a golf stored for maybe 2 years with minimal time out while I save them that’s a possible option.

Might be a long shot but maybe a Vw dealer would display it?

If so buy one of those temp garages, waxoyl the hell out of everything, use old engine oil and paint the underside of the floor of the car, keep it washed and clean and use it at least twice a week and it should be fine!

Mynx and Clive have both constantly lived outside. No tents or anything.

Yep stuff goes rusty but it's all fixable. It ain't going to suddenly corrode and end up with holes in everything

Man, 13 years ago I owned my first Mk1, it lived outside constantly and was driven all year round.

Just keep it washed and waxed. 

If you sell it you'll kick yourself….. I've owned and sold 4 mk1's and now I can't even afford a mk3 ffs.

Thanks all. I am in plain sight of a main road and short drive so not real room for a tent garage and leaks that I can’t trace so fills with water in the winter. I will keep it just need to work out how. I shall ask the local VW dealer and may ask bister heritage centre if they want to take it for a few months over the worst of winter. I really don’t want a car cover as it can scratch all the paint but maybe a very good quality one would be ok ????  

I have 2 weeks on holiday to decide so let’s see where my head ends up at.

So decision made




It will be staying. Going to invest in a very good quality car cover and keep it outdoors for a while. It is under sealed to death already as it was a daily driver 4 years ago for the person I brought it from.

To stop the thieves I will also take precautions of mechanical anti thefts including storing it up on axle stands. Nothing is fool proof but I can at least make it a challenge for any one who is most determined.  

2 years under cover is not long for an old car and I don’t want to put it in storage it was made to be driven and enjoyed not locked away and ignored.

Thanks to all the messages and kind offers to buy it from me but ultimately if I sold it that would likely be it for me as I would never afford another classic I truest wanted. (Not many cheap whale tales, quatro’s or AC cobras out there).

Now I have seen tailored car covers for about £200 but anyone who knows a highly recommend outdoor cover which is lined with soft anti scratch material then please feel free to comment.

I've got a outdoor cover from Classic Additions for my old mk2. Used it mainly through the winter as the car was a daily in the summer but the last year of owning it it spent most of summer under it too, paint work always looked spot on after, I always washed and made sure the car was clean before putting it on, never had any issues with it even in strong winds!

Hi, I have a similar dilemma due to a potential house move in 2020.

I was prompted into action when a leaflet came through my door from https://www.courtmanandco.com/ to rent a garage. They cover London and the South of England, I assume there are others.

I pay £58 per month plus a £200 deposit, min rental 3 months and rolling quarterly payment. Obviously this will change on the area. I enquired on a Thursday, paid on Friday , had the keys delivered and in on the Saturday.

Whilst mine was not on the website at the time, I would give them a call.

This has allowed me to store the car separately and take it out at will for a drive, go to shows, etc, in addition to using my own garage for storage, packing, etc.
