Where is the water coming from...

I was hoping someone could spread some light on a problem I am having with a lovely Mk1 Golf GTi, after it has rained there is a LOT of water in the drivers footwell and the rear driverside footwell.  Also the hatch appears to be filling with water, as I lift the boot you can hear water running down.  I have had a scour around on the web and numerous things have been suggested such as the weather seals in the water, but I would really value any input from people who have experienced this matter.

It has a non factory sunroof, which I will check out fully tonight, at the moment I am trying to dry it out then I can sit in it next time it rains and see where any drips are coming from, any input????

Cheers guys…

Aside from you sunroof and things like the door and window seals, check your scuttle area under the bonnet and each side there are drain tubes. These can often (and quickly!) fill up with debry - leaves n stuff - and the water cannot drain away. If this happens it will overlflow through the heater fan and into your footwell (happened on drivers side with mine)

Easy fix, just unblock the rubber tubes!

Also in the scuttle area, check where the wiper mounting brcket is welded to the scuttle as again you can get a small hole form between the bracket and the bulkhead/scuttle, or if your really unlucky a split between the two bracket mounts and this leaks water directly into the drivers side . Bets way to check this is to take of the plastic scuttle cover, clean out any muck and have a good prod about. (Seen this on mine, and spent months looking for leaks   )

Been mentioned before, but you could try covering the complete floorpan and footwells in talcum power, then sit inside with a helper and a hosepipe. Should help trace it.

Water in the tailgate is often the sealing of the rubber tubing between tailgate/body or the grommets for the heated rear window.

I have a similar problem from abve the steering ruber seal water drips into the footwell of the drivers side do you know where this could be coming from? The draining area is free of leavs etc, can water appear in this place from the front screen if there is rust around the common area?

Double check that your rear light clusters are tightly bolted down - it's surprising how far the water can track through the car.

I`v just done a repair where this was happening and it was where the lower window frame had rotted out and was dripping down into the footwell. :(
