Red is probably one of the hardest colours to match, especially if it is 20 years old - Almost impossible.

The only way to be sure is to have the whole car painted…  :dontknow:

Has to be Prospray - Hollins green near cadishead (close to warrington - just round the corner from where AwesomeGTI used to be)

Had a Mk2 sprayed there a while back - fantastic job - offered me a chice of "factory finish" which had that slightly rippled finish or "Glass finish" lots of buffing totally smooth and shiny

Went for the glass finsh

Nice people too

You need to seek out a good paint factor in your area. As long as the mars red has faded evenly a good factor should be able to match the paint. My local one (in Essex I'm afraid) will match paint against body panels and is very successful.

Auto Body Centre did mine. they are based in Bamber Bridge, Preston just off junction 29. As the car took Best Standard Cabriolet at Gaydon last year, they can't have done too bad a job, can they?

PM me for more details.

Right - there were six shades and a couple of varieties of Mard Red, however, believe it or not, Halford (of all places) own brand of paint is pretty much exact for the Mk1 Golf.

There are two varieties, Mars Red and Mars Red 2 (you want plain "Mars Red" - not "2").  If they don't have any on the shelf DON'T user their mixing service (they are never anywhere near!!) - just try a different branch.

So, Mars Red in teh silver can from Halford - use grey primer too, just about perfect match…

I had some of the Halfords stuff which I used to touch up the inside of some of the interior panels/floor area and I have to say it is almost spot on with the fresh Mars red paint I chose to put on the car!

Isn't it so that the Campaigns and all series 2 MK1's used Mars Red no 2?

Absolutely, had some alpine white mixed… didn't match! Found their aerosol alpine white didn't match and unbelievably the mixed didn't even match the aerosol :banghead:  Halfrauds!

Thats no surpise - I got some Alpine White mixed to match the door on my old Polo Coupe and it was miles away…

I once ended up with a can of Mars Red 2 and its nowhere near - is abit too red - probably a better match for earl Polos' - like I say, use the Holfords canned "Mars Red" with grey primer and its as close as you are gonna get.

place round here has same colour but a lot of variations due to age and weathering of paint, they bring out a series of chips then match best one to your car and put it in a aerosol etc.. they are based in south yorkshire and top blokes who will go out of their way to help ya a 400ml aerosol is about 9 quid, called donparts fone 01302-856666
