Parcel Shelf

I have a 1976 LS and the parcel shelf doesn't seem to function correctly. I have a suspicion that it is actually missing something where it "hinges".

I can't seem to find any pictures of that area, so if someone could help me out by posting some photos that would be great!

Fixing the shelf

G'day, Andrew!
(Which part of Oz are you from? Also, visited you website and it's dead!)
I posted recently on parcel shelf repairs. The arrangement on the back of the rear seat is simple but everything has to be perfectly in place for it to function properly. The aluminium strip provides anchorage for the carpet. It must be fitted under the strip perfectly and evenly. There are two elasitcated straps at either end that are held on with a plastic block. These are important, too. The parcel shelf on my Golf was in a shocking state when I bought it. It was so bad that the previous owner took it off and chucked it in his shed! I had to make two galv. steel edge supports to compensate for the damaged board edges.
With these in place, the carpet contacted, and everything set exactly in place, it works a treat. A coat of matt black spray paint underneath finishes the job. Very importantly you have to get the lengths right. I found that the carpet had to be glued along the back edge of the shelf in order to make it short enough for the hatch to close exactly. That's a case of trial and error. Good sources of parts are Matt White matthewjiwhite@hotmail.com in Sydney, and George at luftundwasser@aol.com in Brisbane. These guys are Golf enthusiasts and do good prices (not like the rip off wreckers who realise how scarce Mk1s are becoming and inflate prices!).

Cheers from Australia. Peter.
