The chassis numbers on GTIs aren't different than the non-GTI models, but the sticker in the boot (behind the rear number plate) has a model code on it. I'm not sure what the code for a GTI is (my car isn't handy right now) - anyone know the code?
To be honest, there is a lot of work required to make a non-GTI into a GTI - change engine and gearbox, fuel tank and most pipework, headlining, seats, loom, various brackets under car, and in engine bay, as well as trim…
Once you've seen a few genuine GTIs, you wouldn't find it hard to spot a conversion - most are small-engined cars, made to look like GTIs to keep insurance costs down - I've never heard of anyone trying to fool anyone (too much work for the potential price difference)…
From your post, it sounds like you have a particular car in mind - if so, tell us more about it…

My wife bought me one for xmas ( wot a suprise eh?!!!!). Iwent to pick it up yesterday.
Its in really good nick - a left hooker 1983 1.8 in mars red without a trace if rust. Electrics seem a bit dodgy tho (its been stood for a year). Keep me quiet for a while searching for original bits like 9 spokes and elusive rad grill red trim.

What symptoms are you getting (or not getting!)?
First of all before you do anything else - ensure that the battery is a good one, and is charged fully: lots of strange behaviour is due to batteries with less than 11v or so…
