Water Loss

Hi all!

I have a 1989 GTi Cab which loses about half a litre of water every 200 miles.

I have flushed and replaced the coolant. Replaced the sensor on the top of the expansion tank. The head gasket was done 500 miles ago and the oil is not emulsified its crystal clear.

I have been told that the problem could be the expansion cap?

Any ideas, thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks

G

You should be able to get the cap tested at a garage to find out if it's not up to scratch. Mine lost water, couldn't see where from, but it was the tank itself, years of chafing had caused a leak somewhere around where it mounts. Fitted another 2nd hand tank and it cured it in 5 minutes. Cap was ok in my case, but it's probably worth either testing another cap on the tank or getting the existing one checked.

may as well just buy one, dirt cheap anyway.

Went to my local VW dealer and bought a new tank and cap.

Fitted and bled the system and went for a spin only to find that water was still going missing  :(

So i opened the bonnet and for some reason, dont know why I looked at the heater tap to see if it was leaking. It want but before the heater tap there is a 3 inch pipe connecting it to the engine. There was a tiny hole which was misting water and when the engine was revved this turned into a fine jet, almost invisible!

I replaced the pipe for 6p from the motorist centre and I have not lost any water for 500 miles!  :D
