Temp gauge

Right, this I'd doing me head in.

My temp gauge randomly started flashing and as soon as the the ignition was on (engine not started) the temp gauge shot up to max and was flashing.

After changing temp level sensor, fan switch and looking at the wiring, it seems the wiring was dodgy. So got a mechanic friend to wire from the temp sensor on the front of the block (a spade connector) straight into dash and the flashing stopped!! Result!

However, now the temp gauge doesn't move at all!!! The red light flashes briefly when the engine is turned on and goes out!!

Is the spade connector the correct sensor as I noticed a 2 pin sensor closer to the head…..which one actually gives the Reading??
