Mk1 Golf 1800 GTI- cutting out when warm problem

My car starts first time, when it hit s running temp its cuts out, sometimes it re starts, some times it doesnt.
 Where to start first? was looking to get a tune up to make sure its all set up correctly, as it does smell rich
 But any help would be great, not sure if its fuel problem or electrical, car has new tank and filler neck, so im sure rust isnt a issue.

does it always cut out when it reaches a certain temperature?
or does it just cut out randomly?

It s usually when its warm, however just started it from cold ran for about 30 seconds, then wont re start, have checked for a spark at the plugs and there isnt  one.
 Changed over the coil  and ignition moduel and still no joy.
 any further help please

my money's on the distributor, sometimes the hall sender fails, sounds like this could be your problem

thanks pal, ive swapped a coil , made no difference, will try  the dizzy next
