Mk1 1.6 Engine & Gearbox ... HELP NEEDED

Ok guys, i'm very new to the watercooled VW scene (Beetle's were my flavour of choice until recently)

But anyway, I've bought myself a Mk1 and while sourcing some parts I've ended up with a 1.6 GTi Engine and Gearbox (came as part of a job lot of parts that I got the opportunity to buy)

Now, i know these are rare items and are hard to come across, but how rare are they?

My GTI is a 1.8 but I am unsure what to do …

Buy an early shell and build the 1.6 into it?
The guy who removed the engine also cut the mount from the chassis leg to allow it to be easily fitted to another car.

Also, what would it be worth if i was to sell it?

Here's a crap phone pic of it

So what if its rare? Its pretty meaningless, in itself. If you need an engine (do you???), by all means buy an engine for it. Don't just buy a 1.6 GTI engine for the sake of it, etc etc

Ok, just to clarify ….

I bought this engine as part of a job lot of MK1 parts that i got the chance to purchase. I didnt need it, nor did i buy it just for the sake of buying it; it came as part of a deal.

All i was wondering is how scarce these are? How many are still around? Do they demand a premium?

I think it evens itself out. Its a little less common than the 1.8 GTI engine, mainly because there's thousands of cabbys and sciroccos which carried on production until 1994 and 1992 respectively.

And it follows that less Golfs originally had a 1.6GTI engine, therefore might need a replacement 1.6 engine for some reason or another.

But the supply matches the demand, so there is no price premium. For someone doing an 'engine conversion' of a lower model to GTI engine, they'd naturally choose the 1.8 over the 1.6 (its 0.2 better, after all…..) but when you consider the power output stats, there's actually only 2bhp in it (torque is much better on the 1.8, and the performance is similar mostly because a 1.8 is also higher geared - which helps the fuel economy).

I don't think I could put a figure on the number of engines, or 1.6GTIs, but I'd say for value, £100 if there's no issues with the engine. More realistically, there seems to be a range of prices - say £50-150 is achievable.
