fan cutting in problems

hi, i have changed all the pipe work, new rad, new themostat, and new fan switch, but the fan will not kick in until the temp gauge neddle goes off the chart and the red light starts to flicker on and then the fan kicks in but surely that is way way way to hot.

any ideas????

My temp on 83 gti runs on the half way mark and the fan kicks in with the temp gauge slightly over the half way mark, sounds like the fan switch or a dodgy temp gauge/sender.

There are several different temp fan switches (GSF). Just put anew one in mine. It cuts in about 3/4 of the way to the warning light. Think its about a 93 degree one. I think there is a lower temp one than this.

Fan should kick in way before the needle gets to the far right and definetely before the red light flashs, which means overheating and stop immediately 8O. All my golf's fans have kicked in after the gauge passes over the midway point i.e when sitting in traffic or parking in hot weather.

When the cars warmed up and left standing, does it take long for the fan to kick in? The fact your car seems to be running ok (it shouldn't be if it had really overheated) means highly likely to be something wrong with the sender/gauge. Check the temp rating of your fan switch before changing it, you don't want to make your car run unneccesarily cold just to make the gauge read right

hey people thanks 4 all the help, i took the head off last night and there was no crack in the head gasket but it was bent where on of the head bolts went through, so i think that was the cause of all this
