Advice Needed for Recent Non-Runner!

I'd be grateful if anyone can offer advice on this as I'm reluctant to move my beloved Mk1 Golf Cabriolet in case I cause damage to it.

Driving it as normal and it suddenly developed a noise that I can only describe as a 'heater' from underneath the bonnet - will only run in high revs (drove it back in 1st gear!) and, as soon as I allow it to idle or run in low revs, it cuts out.  Car was running fine prior to this with the exception of the heater was not working (haven't checked the fuse yet but temperature gauge has remained normal throughout).  I have identified a largish hose that sits behind (and lower down) the engine (but not attached to it) at the back of the bonnet area which I can only describe as 'obliterated' but, as a novice, I've no idea if this is the cause of my problem.  Please help!  Thanks.

Sounds like one of the heater hoses went and maybe soaked the electrics.

How far did you drive it when you had the problem?

I would check the compressions and replace the damage hose and refill with coolant.  Try and dry out any of the electrics if they are obviously wet.

Let us know what results you get from that.

Cheers
