There should be a engine code on the engine block just below cylinder 3 (1 being near the alternator belt) it will start with 2 letters eg. FR......

1988 Mk1 Golf GTi Cabriolet 1.8cc DX, K-jet. Daily drive. 300,000 miles and counting
1978 Mk1 Scirocco GLS 1.6cc FR, Webber carb. Weekend toy.

Would this be it JB 716 172? Did a quick google search but didn't really find what I was looking for.

Thank you for your help. I wanted to know what vw the engine was out of, as I was told the engine was out of a Polo and judging from the information you found that's not the case. The next thing I wanted to know was whether or not the engine was originally a carb engine or if it has been converted to carb from fuel injection. Also on the engine it is stamped as a 1.6 but in the information listed its down as a 1500, does that not imply the engine listed is a 1.5? and that maybe the code I have found is not actually the engine code? The 1.6 is stamped on the head and the JB code is on the block.

After some more research there was a 1.5 carb engine with the jb code fitted in the cabriolet and scirocco so this does suggest that it is a genuine carb engine so appears to have answered my question but doesn't example the 1.6 stamp on the head. Maybe a different head has been fitted?

I assume you mean strut mounts?
How can you tell from an image, please?

The metal plate is supposed to flush with the rubber, if you have a look at this thread you can see some worn strut mounts, if you can get your finger in between the rubber and metal it’s time for new mounts.

Yours in the picture above are different to Standard mounts and may the aftermarket solid version ?

I believe the mounts on the early cars are different from later cars so prob factory as the engine and VIN on strut top look like from an early car (the white one)

1983 Mars Red 1.8 Golf GTI
1987 Alpine White 1.8 Clipper Cabriolet

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

The pre 80's Golfs/Rabbit's/Sirocco's strut mounts were different than what you would see on 80's era 80's Golfs/Rabbit's/Sirocco's.
1977 shows both styles.

83 and newer only one style is now showing and is more in-line as to what we see in later Cabriolets and mk1's of the 80's
