Help and advice in 1.5 JB mods

Post

As titled, I need some advices from someone more experienced :)

OK, first, hello, guys. I guess this is my first forum post ever.
I own a MK1 Jetta 1983, with the 1.5 JB engine on it. Currently stock with Pierburg Carburetor, but I'm planning to participate next year at some local amateur/retro races so I'm trying to get more power out of the engine. I managed to get my hands on some Yamaha R1 carbs which have been previously mounted on a 1.3, I got to build a new manifold if that's what it's called because I guess it won't fit on my engine; Mk2 1.8 8v camshaft which the seller advertised as Mk1 GTI 1.6 camshaft, hopefully it will fit because as far as I red, it should; Also, I found that people use also a fuel pressure regulator. I got a friend in England which recommends me to hook the carbs together with a Facet low pressure pump and a Malpassi fuel regulator.
So what you guys say? Will the camshaft fit my head? Will the carbs run fine with this pump-regulator route?
I'm waiting for you replies,
Thanks, and have a nice weekend everyone! :)

What are the regulations for the mods you can do for the races?

I don't really know that, they mostly go for cc-hp I guess or by the year. Anyways I can get to participate. There are no FIA regulations or something like this if that is what you mean :)

Ok no probs, I don't know if they want you to keep the engine exactly the same; or the same engine (but mods allowed), or an "age correct" engine, or anything that fits.

The reason being, the later Clipper carb engine is 1.8 and higher compression, so its an easy gain of about 15bhp and offers more scope for further power improvements. They are probably easily obtainable too.

Thanks for your answer, that'd be great :D The only rules are if you want to go by modified class, you should have complete interior/exterior. Engine/suspension/exhaust doesn't count.

PS the cam - there's 2 types, hydraulic and non-hydraulic. They are easily identifiable in the engine by the number of camshaft caps (but I've forgotten the details - search will help).

If you have the skills, money (for the materials) and time to make a custom inlet manifold for some other carbs, then that money could be directed towards something which will produce much more bhp/cost (or effort spent) eg a 16V conversion or even just a GTI engine on a single Weber?

There's a lot of different routes you can take. The forum is full of info.

The cam I bought is non-hydraulic type and also my head is so. I already have the Yamaha R1 carbs with built inlet manifold for the 1.3 engine, someone told me I could get it fit on my 1.5 but whatever I can build another one. 16V conversion is out of my list because road regulations in my country, I should stick with this engine. GTI engine wouldn't be a bad idea but hard to get one nowadays at least around me. I'll stick to the little "lump"… make it more bump :) I'll get updates on my build on spring, until then I'm trying to get the shell in better shape.
