Drowns/stalls on cold start

Just joined up, after hours of reading a lot of useful threads. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to solve the problem.
I have a Golf MK1 with a 1,8 GU engine, with the lovely Pierburg 2E carburetor. On cold starts it can't idle. It starts ok, but then go down to 5-600 rpm and within 10-15 seconds stalls. If I keep the revs up to heat it up, it runs very sluggish/vibrating and smells like unburned fuel, while heating up. It's very similar to this clip from YouTube: - YouTube
I have checked the waxstat. The pin was completely depressed when I removed it - I couldn't even see there was suppose to be a pin. I submerged it in hot water, and the pin came out. Dried it up and fitted it back, but no change.
I have checked that the choke flap is closed at cold, and opens when getting hot. Clearance is approx 0,7mm at closed position.
I have also checked for vacuum leaks, but nothing to be found.
Any hints? Am I looking in the wrong places when focusing on the choke? Is it simply overfueling?
Another thing; there seems to be a wire connection which isn't hooked up to anything. I haven't seen that connection on the other threads I have been reading - what is it for?
I have tried to attach a photo.
