running rough from cold

I?ve got a 92 K reg 1800 clipper  88k

The engines runs rough from cold for about 15 minutes then seems fine.. It also runs on now and again when killing the ignition.

3 months ago I took it to a local older vw specialist who changed the wax stat, it ran a little better for about a week.  The guy was way friendly and suggested if the wax stat did not cure the problem a whole new carb from G&S might be the way to go?

I?ve also had a friend suggest the rings on the engine might need replacing?

Any thoughts?   If I go for a new webber carb from G&S I believe it has a manual choke that would need to be fitted.  Has anyone fitted a new carb ?

Cheers for any advice, Jez

Yeah i fitted a Weber carb on my 91 Clipper - my first and only engine part i have ever chaged on a car lol!

It went well(ish!), i put the choke just under my steering wheel attached to the side of the centre console and ran the cable thru a spare grommet.

I did manage to damage the gasket tho and so had to have it replaced and properly tuned when i had the car serviced.
Does deffo run better tho - still bit pants when its cold for the first 10 mins til it warms up then it runs like a dream!
I put some 'nitrox' additive stuff in the tank the other day, has mos def helped too.

There is a proper choke mount point on all series two Mk1s on the dash to the left of the steering wheel.

There's a proper choke mount on my mk2 driver, late model, '89. It's just really difficult to get out without demolishing the cover like i did heh.

Under the steering wheel there's a rubber plank that can be removed, I stuck my choke cable through there and connected it up.

My weber gives me white smoke out of my exhaust even though it's been properly tuned for about 5 minutes when warming up on a cold day. Hate to see what it's like over the winter!

It's quite easy to fit the weber carb, I managed to do it myself with no previous engine mechanical experience (other than the basics) without a manual.

Used the haynes to help me remove the old but couldn't help me fit the new. It's quite easy, just plug and play.

You'll have quite a few electrical, vacuum and oil lines left dangling at the end of it. The oil lines just connect to each other, one from the manifold and the other to the oil line. I left the vacuum hoses as they were, havn't noticed any problems, same with the electrical lines.

I suggest if you do it yourself to pay a few quid and get it properly tuned and checked over to make sure you've done it properly!
