Yes, there is a kick down, and on a nice running auto you rarely feel it….

You can feel the shift on a slow take off.  and it stays in 3rd quite a lot.

I have had the occasion to need massive amounts of speed on the interstate, and if you are going @ 55-50mph and floor it, both of mine would kick down and start to fly… One time the rev limiter missed, and well it was about 75mph before it shifted up…

Treat them well and they are a wonderous thing kind of like the 70's Steely Dan song…. "No shifting at all…..FM."

Header or 4-2-1 exhaust, open up the airbox on cis.

not the same engine, I have a 1.8 Digifant.

NGK plugs make my car peppy.

Yes it wasn't unusual for me to be doing 85-90 MPH on the interstate, and I found that adding a external oil cooler on my ride helped alot, but since you have the VW water stabilized one, you probably don't see the higher oil temps at speed on a hot day, as over here the 90's that I drive or drove, didn't ahve a oil cooler on them so I added an external.

One of the best things you can do mate is a change of the ATF.
I did this to mine about 10 years ago.
Might give you some pointers

It did make a big difference to the car it was so much smoother gear change and running

Chortle, the way that I change the fluid without dropping it to drain the torque pervertor is the following.

Using a Mighty-Vac and my patented 1 quart sealed jar.

The longer of the tubes is about 3 foot so it enters the transmission fill tube….

Draw or suck out 3 quarts of fluid, Add 3 quarts new.
Drive it around about 2-3 miles, then drain 3 and add 3 new,  drive it 2-3 miles, drain 3 add 3 new,  drive,  drain 3 add 2 1/2 then drive it about a bit and check and top it off to the correct amount. This effectively replaces the old and dilutes what's left.  You can drop the pan, but measure the quantity so you can add the same then wipe the pan and filter out… But to be honest I have been doing this to my autos for the last 10 years about every 4 years and it works like a charm….. Just my way of doing things without dropping the tranny and emptying the torque convertor…. as that is a right royal pain in the keister to get re-aligned some times.

Oh and in the bentley the re-alignment for the measurement of the TC to the Bellhousing is in the engine section and not the transmission section as it is in the Haynes….. go figure. here it is.

I didn’t need to drop the trans or anything else except for the sump pan.
Replace gasket and clean filter and fill it back up.

Ah, but the torque convertor holds 3 qts of ATF…. and well you have to exchange that too…. :)
