1.8 Reving High When Cold

Hello, I have a 1993 Clipper 1.8 manual that I have owned from new. It now has done 76,000 miles and recently the engine has started to rev at 2000rpm when started from cold, she never used to rev above 1400rpm. As soon as she warms up (about 2 miles) the revs drop to 1000rpm and the car still drives perfectly. Does anyone know is this anything to worry about or a sign of something going wrong that I need to sort out? Or am I just getting paranoid in my old age. Cheers

When I had a MK2 Driver 1600 with the same E2E carb it used to play up almost annually, it would rev at 3,000+ for 5 mins or start normally but stall when the clutch was let up.

It will be one of the many cold start/idleing devices that are fitted to the carb. Waxstat, three point four unit, pull down unit, various vacuum gubbins + pipes, various electrical thingies and wires. Google pierburg E2E and most of what comes back is problems with these carbs.

As a DIY check make sure all the pipes and wires are connected, that fixed mine on a few occasions, otherwise of off to a carb specialist who know what they are doing with these devices of the devil. Long live K-Jet (or even better old fashioned non turbo indirect injection Diesel)
