1.5 carb upgrade?

Hi,
Have recently picked up a cheap 5door y-reg GX. It has the 1.5 JB engine, and the carb (pierburg/solex) seems very tired.
What sort of options are there for replacing/upgrading the whole unit? Weber, etc…? What is a compatible donor car? I want to have some fun with this as i dont feel that precious with the rust bucket, but not spend that much.

Any advice would be appreciated,

thanks,

Andrew

Webcon 2e2 replacement. Type that in the search

I would say though around 200 quid for a new one. But if you can find a
webber 32/34 dmtl vw kit i would go for that. Try a local scrappy you might be lucky.

Thanks for replying Andy, So would a 32/34 dmtl work on a 1.5, as it is meant for the 1.6/1.8? The list i found said the 36 tlp replaced the pierburg 1B3, the one for the 1.5?

Sorry, i am trying to learn about this stuff  (carbs etc..), hence asking the questions.  Also trying to spend as little as nesc, so deffo down the scrappers.

thanks

Andrew

ps Good name

Ahh right.. 1b3 not the 2e2, like you iam leaning a little..lol

Deff would say a replacement would make a huge difference as i have read loads over the peirburg-webber debate. I would go for a complete kit thou so that you get all the parts needed, so that you dont end up running around for other parts.

GSF has done  kits for the VW and around the 200 quid mark. Might seem quite exspensive but worth it. Just as its a repair its more like a upgrade as the webber is more "tuned". Make sure when you buy a kit that the Jets are correct for your engine. The sales end can talk you through it and get it right. Also make sure that you get the Manual choke cable as well.

The car will seem alot better i can asure you and better on the fuel.

I upgrades mine to a webber 32/34 dtml new from euro parts. Before i was getting 26-30ish per gallon, soon as the new carb went on 35-40. noticed the throttle responce was far better also. Smooth and no hesitation.

try euro parts for the 1b3 kit
hope it helps

cheers satellite,

A full kit does sound nice, everything you need all in one place, blessed. Shame about the price though, will cost more than the car was! But now i know what i'm looking for  :D  will keep my eyes peeled  8O

thanks for the help,

Andrew

Yes.

the 1b3 carb is replaced by the weber 36 TLP. Although i dont know if it is a straight swap over with the standard manifold/air filter?

Havent been able to track one down, seem pretty hard to find. Plenty of dtml's about for the 1.6/1.8 though.

Apparently the 36 tlp was also used on pug 309 1.6's and a citreon BX 1.6 aswell. Guess the jetting is different though as vw is smaller engine?

Any help paul?

cheers,
Andrew

ill have a proper look at the  manifold next weekend mate and see if you can fit the dtml's, pierburgs etc and let you know, might be a case of they bolt straight on or a case of changing manifold as well, ill have a good look,

Hello Andrew I wonder if you can help me, noted your post as ?quoted? I?m in need of a new Carb for my MK1 1.8 (1,781cc) clipper convertible. Ideally I need to source one before the 17th of this month as the car is have the head gasket fixed/replaced (whatever happens).

I know absolutely nothing about the mechanics of cars, I do know that the current carb I have is a Pierburg (would this be a 2E2 carburettor?), but reading these threads it seems a Weber one will work as well, if not better?

I?ve found the following on one website, I don?t mind spending the money to sort the problem out, but I want to ensure I?m buying the right parts, would this be a good replacement for my busted Pierburg?

WEBCON n/a 341440190 CARB SCIROCCO/GOLF/JETTA 1781c 1983-88 1983-90 PIERBURG 2E2 - Manual

^ I believe that buying the manual version will mean having to drill a hole in my dash for the choke? (Something I?m not really keen on)

WEBCON n/a 341440200 CARB SCIROCCO/GOLF/JETTA 1781c AutoTrans 1983-90 PIERBURG 2E2 - Automatic

^ Is this part for an ?automatic? transmission car, it doesn?t mean automatic choke does it?

So many questions, any help is really appreciated!
