New Arrival...

Not a VW, but as part of the deal to sell my gf's Clio:

No MOT, so not sure what fate is in store for it - interesting and at least in principle, oddly underrated car, went very well on the drive back.

It passed!?! I am amazed. Now I need to put a timing belt, tensioner and water pump on it.

If it is a cvh then they are the simplest cambelts to do ever!!

Not only is it a CVH, it's a RWD CVH with a spare-wheel's worth of clearance between it and the radiator and only one belt to remove first. We just got another set of new arrivals:

So the car's being ignored for the time being; it's got the MOT, it's insured, but I don't need to drive it anywhere so unless someone wants to buy it as it is I won't be taxing it for a while. Going to put the belt on and the waterpump, replace a few hoses and pipes if I can get them cheap to get the cooling system absolutely right.

It's a bit tappety, so I'm thinking i might have a go at a camshaft swap on it given the ease of access. They're about £100 though.

Yep, I was somewhat surprised really - but I guess there wasn't anything wrong with it, I just wish the spaceframe were "pretty" - it'd make it feel worthwhile fixing things like pop-up lights and badly fitting/modified interior parts.

Yeah, I know, but I don't have the money for a better one unless someone buys my Golf - and there's not much interest in that either (which is going to be expensive, as it'll get a stainless filler, new CV joint and still be worth under £2K because of the roof, and then when I put a new roof on there'll be some other reason why it's not worth anything, and frankly I'm sick of thinking about how much this Golf has cost me in real terms).

Anyway. Back to the SS1. As it's not been snapped up as an MOTd project for £440, I've started work on tidying it so it can be a usable scruffy one instead.

First, the bootlid replacement - one of the hinges had snapped, so it all comes out at the back…

And now waiting for me to remove the rear deck (have to drill out rivets), wirebrush and repaint some of the armature, and reassemble it all.

Meanwhile at the front end (no pictures) the front crossmember (which supports the inboard shocks) has to come out to undo the crank pulley and do the belt and waterpump. Which is progressing fine actually, so I might fit new shocks whilst I'm in there. The removed crossmember will be shot-blasted and POR-15d if I can get it done for a reasonable price, and I'll use stainless bolts to secure it with copperslip so hopefully next time it'll look pretty and come apart again.

The Scimitar club hillclimb/meeting is at Curborough in a couple of weekends, so hoping to pick up some bits there to tidy it up more too!

It's my studio, for photography - being full of old cars is not the intended purpose, particularly given how much the SS1 sheds!

However, a first for me…

New timing belt and water pump fitted! And yes, it does still run.

The rest of it is in bits, including the very unusual front suspension layout…

That's the front crossmember that had to be removed, the shocks are inboard on it (and old, and knackered, as you can probably see).

And the back end? Rear deck rivets drilled out, and…

Part of the framework that supports the boot hinge, rear deck, antenna and fuel fillter. The fuel tank is visible; yes, they are that easy to change - the boot liner comes out in minutes.

Yes please! Thanks! I'll PM you :)

SS1s are a lot cleverer than I first though; however so are GTEs and Sabres apparently! GTEs are cheaper as projects and more expensive as finished ones, whereas these SS1s are a bargain for what they are and what you can do with them :)
