I got a lift to Newcastle airport, flew to Heathrow then onwards to Hamburg, caught the train the Emden and my pal who I'd made during my search picked me up in the car. He'd collected it for me from a couple of hundred miles south of where he lived. He even paid for it and I settled up with him on arrival. And to think my dad said… "don't trust the Germans!"
After a few days stay I then drove through to Amsterdam and caught the ferry back to Hull. It was a great road/sea and air trip :)Will get some pics up

That's brilliant, how did you persuade the guy to help you so much! Was he a fellow dubber? Still waiting on these pics!! :p

Pics from 1st leg in Germany, collected by Thomas

It's all mine now!

Waiting to board the ferry, slightly weighed down at the back with a set of ATS Cups & tyres!

I know I'm nearly home when I see this well known view

More recent pics…

Thomas is a mad, keen Mk1 Jetta enthusiast who was more than happy to help me out. We forged a great friendship and he remains a very good friend some 5+ years later. You may have seen one of his long term projects elsewhere

Aw your jetta looks amazing! And what an adventure! That's great that you stayed such good friends with Thomas. Do you have any plans to go to Worthersee 2014? Would be great to get a group of jetta going!

Looking good - looking forward to seeing your progess and seeing it at some Scottish meets this year.

I've got a 1.3 golf, looks like the exact same engine. Other than a weber carb it is completely standard so if there are any bits on yours that appear to be missing or you're not sure about I can post a pic to help.

James

That could be really useful thanks James. One thing i have been having trouble sourcing is an exhaust system. All the ones i can find are for 1.6 or 1.8 - any ideas?

Hmm, suppose it depends on if you are looking for just standard or stainless steel. I have just always had standard and when needed just had parts of the exhaust system replace by a garage - with not too much trouble. I think the garages get them from VW dealers, however, at a cost or use universal parts. Had a quick look online and VW Heritage appear to do all the parts needed - I suppose most of the parts (other than the manifold) could be replaced with universal parts if you know what I mean as long as the diameter of the pipe is correct and the mountings. If you want to get a stainless steel system there a number online that claim that they can fit (Venom Motorsport for example have some I believe), although I think you may have trouble getting a manifold for a 1.3 off the shelf. Probably best, if you haven't already, post on the 1.3 thread here on the forum to ask if there is anywhere that people can suggest you could get a system from. Sorry not being much help.

No no that's great, I'll try some of those, the car should be over the pit in 3-4 wks time so I'll get the exhaust off and see diameters etc. I'd like stainless steel - at least for the back box but the cars on a budget so can't go overboard but don't want to scrimp either.

The jetta is coming!!

Getting it trailer to my garage tomorrow - at last I can get stuck into it properly!

This week - exhaust off and update underseal - any recommendations on the best one to use? It's got a black coating already so just looking fill in any gaps/top it up.

Hay Spilz,

Movement at last, got the jetta in my garage at the weekend, putting it up on axle stands this evening and get stuck in.
Engine covers painted and once dry i'll reseal and fit them.
Do you happen to know where i would get a rear windscrean rubber seal? Need to take both screans out for some welding and would be easier to cut the seals.

In its proper home

I think all projects are like that mate. When it goes wrong take a step back and have a beer :)

Nice to see you are making progress!
As far as I can tell the rear window seals are pretty hard to get hold of, and I bet they're not cheap either. Have you tried VW heritage over the phone? I was after some stuff that they didn't have online and they sorted me out.

They do have stuff that isn't listed.

If it was me though I would try and keep it in one piece mate.

Aw cheers Smudger1980, Spilz and Chay!! I was abit disheartened after that afternoon lol, but back on track and didnt even need a beer! lol!

I'll try VW Heratige Spilz, someone else had told me they are really good for advice too, ive bought a few bits form them already and they do a great service! Is going to be tricky getting the glass a rear seal out in one piece.

I cant wait to get it on the road, driving it out my grans garage before trailing it to mine was a short distance but was great to have it actually driving!

Hopefully another update soon!

Progress at last :)

Finally got it up on axel stands during the week, in the process of taking the exhaust off atm - does anyone know if removing the central silencer box is an MOT fair? The back box is pretty wrecked as i suspected but would prefer to take out the middle box and just have stright pipe.

Loads of dirt and muck to get off before the wax oil and going to change the fuelines as well.

It's amazing how much muck collects under cars :(

What you using for the fuel lines?

Post

Yeah although once i got at it with a wire brush, scredriver and electic sanding bit it all came off quite easily :D

Just done under the boot/back end of the car today, got rid of the rust patches, painted it with a rust primer. Needs another coat then i'll do the rest of the underside before giving it all a coat of underseal rather than waxoil as that seams to be what was used on the car before and has done a pretty good job.

As you can see the the back box is a rust box - trying to find a good but not too pricey sports back box not not had much luck yet.

lots of space with the exhaust out the way.

The breaks are looking pretty bad - especially knowing they dont work - next task after the underside

Knckard

At first i thought there might have been some salvagable parts on this bit but on closer inspecrtion there were a few holes.

Also managed to get the badges off the boot for refurb. Started to paint one but looked pap so decided to mask them all off and going to spray them instead.

Have also got over my fear of going under a car on axel stands, lol, which is just as well cause im going to be pretty much living under there for the next couple of weeks lol.

The fuel lines: well when we started it up to move it to my garage it had a wee hole in the fuel line which then snapped lol. Did a bodge repai with a rubber pipe which actually worked really well, but cant leave it. I've got a piece of copper pipe what i think will do it but keen not to take the tank off if possible.

Aww thanks dude, yeah i was sitting under it and got the odd though - if it fell on me now i'd be squashed in half -  but can't think that and i actually got quite used to it and hopefully wont take too long.

I've always wanted to do a project and i've always wanted to learn how to do things on a car and nothing beats having a go at it yourself, i've watched a a load of Wheeler Dealers which has helped too lol.

After today though I can feel the bug biting and i think once the jettas done i'll be looking for another project - only probs is my flat doesnt have a garage and my dad is claiming his garage back once the jettas done too lol.

Hopefully have some more pics later this week :)

Do Jetex do a system the Jetta?

Post

Well thanks to the fabby snow I got snowed in and couldnt go to work which meant - Jetta Time!!

Decided i'd crack on with the rust coating and removal of any loose rush or underseal. Took alot of scraping under the cils but got all the loose bits off. Not much rust which is great, but someone has jacked it up a few times at each side and knackard the edging so need to fix that. Got a good look at the break and fuel lines. Fuel one should be fairly straight forward to replace but not sure about the breaks.
I'v rust coated all but the front underside of the car now and once thats done i'll get the rear wheels off and check the hubs out. Had see some powder coated drum cover for sale but going to have a go at it myself and see if i can get a good finish on these ones.

Both sides loose underseal scraped off.

Lots of grey rust coat patches, but over all not too bad. Not very exciting pics atm lol but i'm having so much fun doing the car already that i want to document it all. i'm already thinking about what im going to do when the jetta is finished as think i have the bug now lol

Current extra bit of fuel pipe on the fuel line.

Wont be too long before i'll be thinking of sending it off to the body shop. I had been thinking about changing it orange but there have been a few orange jettas about so then thought id keep it red, now though Massbad69 mentioned his dads maroon Jetta, and i'd forgotten i saw a maroon one at all types in the campsite and it was beautifuk. Hummm how am i going to decide???

Post

Maroon would look nice mate I think. Flip a coin and decide that way ;)

Post

Haha I can't just flip a coin! - i'm not choosing a new handbag lol. Tricky tricky as mars red does look great - your golf is a great example, nice and sporty, but maroon is so different but may look too classic. Will need to find some pics of maroon ones and compair.
