The Mk1 was second choice....

Im relatively new to the VW scene. I have an Audi as my posh car, and bought a Mk2 Caddy that im tidying up for the work commute, then i was looking for a Mk3/4 Escort to restore, but was offered this and gave up looking for the escort. So this is how it arrived after sitting in a field for 2 years:

Then my mate washed it for me:

Charged the battery up:

And amazingly it started so i drove it inside:

We gunked the engine, needs a bit more yet:

And we started T-Cutting it:

Its lowered, polybushed, braced and other than a bit of panel Rot, is pretty spotless. Underneath suprisingly so on first inspection although after seeing Jellys i may look more closely. It has some new panels with it including wings and arches and a few other bits and bobs. Now i need to decide whether to have it instead of the Mk3/4 Escort i was going to get. Either way this or the escort will be put in the corner till the Land Rovers further progressed, as a sort of investment thing, as both cars values are rising at the mo.

Onto day two.
Well me and Nigel were sat chatting and the thing getting in the way of me signing the V5 for the GTi was the Mrs. So we come up with a cunning plan.
Nigel starts emptying the inside and binning all the rubbish from inside the footwells and boot:

Then we both got T Cutting and polishing:

See the difference:

Emo had a go with a mop:

And i fitted some Mk2 GTi steelies:

So here it is before:

and after:

Mega improvement. She initially said no, but she walked past it a few times so i think i may be allowed it now lmao

Ive since cleared the corner out and put it down there and brought my Landrover project out to work on, so ill put it up on stands this week and get some more pics and decide if i want to progress!
Ill update soon!

I like the bit about, apart from the rot it's spotless!

Always impresses me when people have the expertise and patience to take on a project that requires that amount of work.

Well today i got the Mk1 on axle stands after reading the MK1 owners club forum and seeing a couple that had rotted bad underneath, and got al worried. So rolled under with a screwdriver and although the pics dont show a lot, it was pretty clean :)

Back of spare wheel well has a hole:

But the inner arches were clean:

Just to show, although dirty, the interior is tidy!

youve got yourself a good deal, an interior like that and what seems to be a more solid than most golf is worth a good few hundred quid mate.

check the filler neck/rear upper drivers arch, where the sills meet the arches, front sills/floorpan for jackign accidents and inner wings where they meet the front panel. also where the axle mounts. they are the worst areas on a mk1

Rear axle mounts appear fine. Inner arches appear fine. where sills meet the arches have gone but if thats all i need to worry about im chuffed :)

I started de-greasing my new engine for the GTi. A bored out 1.8 thats now a cammed up 1.9. Apparantly a TSR developed engine, whoever they are. Its not spotless yet but got a lot of the crap off. Its been sat for a year so needs dismantling to be checked over:

Also swapped the defender and golf over so i can crack on with the golf whilst waiting to find a donor Discovery for its running gear:

Started stripping the Mk1 (some pics are for my reference hence the randomness lmao):

And got my GTi rack ready. Strapped the seats up so they dont fall off. Got some covers to go over them too:

And it appears i have Mk2 stub axles. Theyll need replacement mk1 items then:

And surfer dude got some air :)
