The Impulse Purchase (Slow Progress Content)
The Impulse Purchase (Slow Progress Content)
However
I picked up a KR for free and already had a gearbox, bike carbs, fuel pump and rado front seats i started itching for another toy.
(mk2 is still not complete though which is why this is going to be slow progress)
This mk1 tin top appeared on eBay and 5 mins drive from my house.
I was originally planning on picking up a mk1 caddy but once i saw this, i could see so much potential and started getting ideas for colors and interiors etc.
She came on lowered suspension (just springs by the look of it) weber carb, 4 out of the 6 black and chrome side strips and some G60 lookalike 14" steels.
Here are some pics of when i went to pick the ol girl up
The dash is in a bit of a state but will be trimmed later on
Needed to replace the carb gasket because it looked like this
Bought a new battery but still wouldn't idle properly.
Checked all the leads and fluids except one important one
mmhhmmm cough petrol
Absolutely fine now and idles as it should, which isn't bad for a car that has been off the road for a number of years.
Plans now are to:
collect bits and pieces ready for shot blasting, powder coating and polybushing.
Remove the bodykit and respray the shell
Coilovers
Sort out the KR ready to be dropped in, but going to keep the 1.6 that's currently in there so that i can drive her.
And finally to sort out the electrics. Hardly any of it works. There are a lot of relays in the glovebox though and hardly any on the fusebox
Hopefully she will be sent off to a friend for the welding jobs and can start prepping for paint and possibly attend a few meets before the end of the year

Coming off:
The orange is paint to temporarily protect against the elements
This will need some attention
And the final one. Starting to look like a real mk1 again
A quick poke around with a screwdriver and a wire brush and the golf needs:
Drivers rear arch
Patch on passenger rear arch
Patch on passenger sill
anyone have any small black plastic bumpers laying around?
not fussed about the condition as long as they're useable and close to the south bucks area

There is a blob of weld holding the wings to the front panel and getting too dark out there to grind it off.
Now need both driver and passenger replacement wings if anyone has any knocking around?

some seriously sketchy electrics in there, for instance:
The power for the headunit has been spliced into the fan speed controller.

i think you don't want much welding for it
the driver rear arch, the spare wheel well and a couple of little bits, but nothing major.
awesome project by the way.. looks sweet.
Going to be an absolute weapon

All the parts to repair the rust issues have been collected
stuffed into the back of the Corsa to fill the Mk1 ready for collection
Collection day for the welding and respray
Goodbye horrible flip paint and nasty rust
Brakes have seized and had a call from the bodyshop saying that she wouldn't start.
After some fresh fuel and cleaning the points, plugs and leads she kicked into life again so pretty relieved
