Nordic-chrome for the slam panel catch see link +gold plated hexbolts and washers 61.50 euro inc delivery

http://www.custom-tuner.de/
for the bonnet catch 48.88 euro inc delivery

Happy at the price as they where  hard to find in the UK
Have seen these on UK E-Bay some times and they all went for around the same money if not more as i paid for these. They look to be new parts plated not 2nd hand plated. The advantage is i still have my old ones should i ever want to put them back.
I did contact LMR who sell chrome vw parts on UK EBAY and they will plate your own catches for 9 pounds each 2 / 3 weeks wait which is a very good price if your own parts are in good nick for chroming, i think they quoted 16 pound to do the bonnet stay again very good price. Slippy8v

gold plating slippys Rivage

After fitting the new chrome bonnet catch, I liked the look of the gold hex bolts and gold spring.
So I picked up a gold and silver plating kit on E-Bay and got to work on the 2 stainless radiator brackets, bolts and washers. Have to say really came out well, so will do few more small bits around the engine in gold just to lift the chrome I have already fitted.

Some before and after shots, I plated the bits a few time just to get the deep gold colour which will match the other hex bolts.

gold plating

cost 32.45 inc postage delux kit came with all bits to start plating gold and silver

enough to cover most small bits but you can buy more of the plating solution on E-BAY.
Best results so far have been on the stainless brackets and bolts i will try it out on the mild steel bits later this week and post results.
Will also try the silver plating out.

Got the gold rad brackets nuts and washers fitted to day and also plated new bolts and washers for the bonnet catch, plated the nuts on the strut brace.
Tried  out the silver plating on brass walking stick end, a work mate makes walking sticks and wanted to see the results, the cap only got 1 plating but still came up ok.

Took one of the blue igniters plug leads out and did one side of the stainless plug end, will need a second plating to give a deeper finish, but not bad results.

Check out the link i already  posted or just put gold plating kit into the e-bay search.
various prices
25ml  around 22quid 50ml 100ml
seems to work best on stainless steel, brass, silver and copper.
tried on mild steel but did not want to waste it on an old bolt so will try on a new one later.

You're better off getting gold plated bits of German eBay where they do it properly and cheaply. The DIY kits only deposit a very fine layer of gold on plus to to it properly you need etches and a decent power supply. Also to make it really shiney the piece should first be polished and then nickel plated. I looked in to it but for the prices they charge over there it wasn't worth the effort or expense of a proper setup.

Slippy's effort is good but stuff from people like Norid Chrome is in a completely different league.

Thanks for the comments MKeeley I agree that anyone wanting to go the show car route should consider the German EBay option
as you can see I picked up a few bits there myself.    However i am not going for the full crome engine show car,it started off with some small bits and just grew, plating in gold only puts a micron or so of gold plate on,but as these small bits are never going to rubbed except with a soft cloth i still feel it is worth while and its all part of the fun being able to do it yourself and for 30 quid it is not going to break the bank.
Also I can impress the wife by buying cheap silver and palm it of to her as gold LOL.

Got the tool box out and fitted the chrome starter everything went well with the fit and was pleased with final fitting.
So the moment of truth turned the ignition key and just a  whirring sound from the starter, tried again and the same sound plus the sound of the starter gear trying to catch.
Arse stripped it out gave it the once over every thing looked ok serial number matched the old one.
Then put it back in and tried again same sound from the starter, so took it out again and put the old one back in, tried it and started no problem!!!!
So any ideas why the starter doesn't work ,as it was stripped to chrome could it have been rebuilt the wrong way, could the wiring be put in the wrong way. All help needed.
Can I test it using a 12v battery and if yes what should I look for or listen for.

Looks like this will become a build thread!!!!!!!
Well it was my birthday this week and look what my wife and small boy got for me.
OK I had sniffed it out on E-Bay and had been looking for one for the last year or so.
It's a new Trimsport stainless steel rear strut brace and no drilling is required and yes it is polished funny that! Good price well pleased.

Hope to get later this week.

yes but, 2 things to take great care with;

1. best if you can use a heavy duty switch to avioid burning  contacts on starter or battery.

2.& when the starter is operated it will kick like a donkey, so make sure it's bolt down or fixed
 very securely.

what should happen is the gear spins &  comes out on the shaft to the collar, but only engage the starter for very short periods.
does the starter gear match the flywheel (tooth per tooth)?
