Silver Campaign Project 2010

Alright guys, this is the first post for my new project…picked it up today after nearly half a year of negotiation with the old owner…. this is the 4th golf I have owned…and 27th car in total, I'm only 27…

We are fairly sure it's a campaign (chassis no: WVWZZZ17ZEW09####)
Its 1984, got green glass, 14inch p-lots with 7mm spacing, leather stitch steering wheel, mushroom door pins, working mfa, twin light grill, metal sunroof, mirror adjusters, only thing it's missing….and probably the worst thing to be missing, the bloody boot sticker!! Looks like it's all been replaced at some stage, new rear panel, wheel well and boot lid!! Shame really….
I have seen a few now, and I'm 90percent sure this is a campaign, it all looks rite and feels original if that makes sense, and the original owner was positive it was a Campaign.

It had a Re-con engine a while back (not a pretty engine bay but functional!)
Chassis looks ok so far, does have a few holes in the off-side inner sill near the front, Metal sunroof is jammed (any tips on freeing them anyone?)
MFA is working along with the entire electrics incl blower!
Body work is quite clean on the surface, new back number plate panel and boot-well fitted along and front & rear valence look to have been done. Doors, boot & bonnet shut lines all really good…and it has one original VW key that fits all the locks….that got to be rare rite!! Ha
It also came with enough spare parts to fill the boot of my Vectra estate and quite a bit of history and receipts for parts.

Completely standard looking relatively non molested car…..or so we hope!! Fingers crossed!

Cheers guys

buggjam :D

looks like a little toy next to an average size modern estate!

my old man lending a hand….he pretends to hate my car projects but he always gets involved in the end…classic engineer!

Here we go……….

Here she is in the garage, I'm going to be working on one side at a time (garage is too thin to do both sides at once!)

bonnet Bra, recent purchase from a fellow forum user

some chump has put silicone sealant around the front wing arch trims, not sure why, they have screws to hold them on, nice condition front wings on the plus side!

first signs of rust….a go-go hidden under the rear plastic arch covers, classic!

wing off

more rust showing up, but so far not too bad!

first weld done!

starting a bit of a tidy up in the engine bay, 545 spectrum grey is the colour way i'm going for, its the same paint i sprayed my last project with (1971 fast road MGB GT)

New fuel filter & K&N air filter (the old air filter was it a really bad way, I'm suprised it even ran!)

new rocker gasket, the old one was making a real mess on the block, simple jobs but make all the difference.

with or without the red pin-stripe? hummmmm. not going to keep the ATS Cups for long I don't think, looking for some weller/superlite/banded type rims, these are too shiny for me!

Blue Peter DIY style! Using a heat resistant plastic (sink) u-bend and a industrial wet-vac hose…total cost….£3! stylish or what!
This "Super uber cool bad boy top spec F1 high performance bespoke turn-key top shelf show ready " set-up just clears the gearbox and doesn't foul any other parts, so fingers crossed it will provide more cool air, combined with the new K&N filter it should improve running (in theory! Rite?!)

ps….I sprayed it all black before re-fitting so it doesn't look like someone dropped a sink in the engine bay!

Removed the rear wiper, pluged the hole with a vw bung/gromit,  I didn't want to fill it as I may want to make the car standard again at some point.

Found a set of s/s vents in the box of spare parts that came with the golf, so fitted them quickly, I don't like shiny chrome stuff normally but they look ok to be honest.

custom exhaust....sort of!

Exhaust ……Hidden Gem…….(in my opinion!)

Was going to remove my oversized s/s back box that came on the car, I'm not really into massive chrome exhaust (no offence) It's a really well made box so my plan was to chop off the large chrome end pipe and weld a new s/s section in, sort of more O.E look but with a slightly bigger bore and some up-sweep side exit angle….

So got the grinder out but made a small cut and I could see a thinner pipe inside the big bore section…..so thought I'd have a closer look….and found this!!

This was hiding inside, smaller bore, all S/S un-polished (nice raw s/s colour) with a cool little outward rolled lip! still need to remove the rest of the old outer section at some point.

semi fitted on the car just get an idea of how it will look, couldn't get a good rear view as in a tight garage but I think it will look key when finished!
