Possible project???
Basically heres the crack, I may have the opportunity to get my hands on a V-reg Mk1 GTi. Its been parked up in a field for a good number of years (Why?!). Had a quick look around it earlier and from what I can see the body panels aren't that rusty, bits of bubble rust on the front doors and near the fuel filler cap. It has no drivers seat or glass, the spare wheel well has a hole. Although this is the only visible rust I could see. Its pretty well grown in covered in brambles and nettles. I thought this would be a good place to start asking the chances of saving it and what sort of work/money would be needed to get her going again. I have not got a price for the car as she is at the moment. And also little idea of what needs doing as only had a quick look :dontknow:
Any advice/ideas would be greatly received

I have so far only cut out one side of brambles, going down next weekend to do the other side and possibly tow her out. I'll get some pics then and put them up as I forgot my camera today

You can't really know until you start working on it, but being in a field with no windows for years won't help. Maybe £10,000 to do it properly?

What are you calling doing it properly? If its that much I think it can stay there! Despite having no glass the interior isn't that bad, pulled up a bit of carpet and could see any rust, I think the undergrowth has protected it a little tbh. What are the most likely things that will need doing to get it running?

Doing it properly would be, sorting out the bodywork so its not just crude patches over rotten areas; taking the time to make panels and repair sections follow exactly the same shape as the original; prepping it all properly, then spraying it with decent paint; replacing suspect items with genuine quality, not pattern parts, etc. Basically, how you'd want a proper restoration to be done.
It was a very rough figure, which matches your description!

do you know what the bloke wants for it?
if its been in a field for that long i would offer scrap money for it if i were you, then if ya tow it out and its too much work for you, brake it or scrap it and you will get your money back.
no harm in trying then
welcome to the site and hope you get along with the car

I have no idea at the moment. I doubt it'll be much if anything as he has no use for it anymore.
Like you say once its towed out it'll be more clear what needs doing. I'll hopefully have another trip down there next week to uncover it more, get some pics and see how much work it looks like.
Thanks for your help guys

I thought the same mate. The only bit I could see is patches on the roof, rear panel, and a hole in the spare wheel well. I tried to remove some of the carpet and couldn't see any rust.abfmk1 said

I have got some pics of mine, went and cut it out a bit more today. I'll get some pics up by the end of the day I hope. Needs another wheel before I can tow her out, just looking for somewhere dry to keep her!

Hopefully will pull it out next week if I can and then persuade someone to let me keep it in a barn and let it dry by stripping it out.
Any more opinions on it? Thanks for that Jelly
