My MK1 16v conversion
Im 14 and me and my dad have bought a 1983 Golf C in quite good condition. We have kept a BRMotorsport 16v engine out of one of my dads previous MK2 golfs.
The car body is quite good…only down side is it has a dent in the passenger side, and the rear arches have been replaced and they arent really to a very good standard!

I steam cleaned the engine bay and the wiped it overwith petrol too remove any wax and grime. I then went over the whole of the bay with a whire brush on a drill to remove the shiny surface.
I then had to fill a few places and tried too smooth off a weld done by the previous owner on the right of the engine bay. I put two coats of galvafroid on it and then painted over with International Danbolie Marine paint wich gives a nice shiny surface.

To put an image up you need to put image tags around the URL of the picture, i.e. [ img ] http://examplepic.com/piccie.jpg [ /img ] but without the spaces.
Photobucket does this for you when you upload pics, so you just need to copy the right code from the box and paste it into the forum without changing anything. It's this one vvv

thats the engine just after getting out of the old mk2

another of the engine after getting it out

engine on the stand after splitting off the gearbox
Here is a few of the engine after the painting and a lot of cleaning

engine painted black and the head silver

just a bit to do on the pulley end of the engine

rocker cover painted black then sanded the strips down, looks great in my opinion…well worth the effort!!!

another of the rockercover!!
I think overall the engine looks quite good…we need to split the head off the engine before putting it in to fit more parts that are below.
Heres a pic of the newly arrived parts all genuine VW stuff!!

Parts are:
exchange water pump
thermostat
Head gasket
Head bolts
sumpgasket
cam chain
rockercover gasket
cambelt
tensioner
new engine mount with rubber and outer plates
Pulley covers
and a load of small gaskets and bolts
I have also got a Mangolesti manifold to mount the carbs on from Demon Tweeks

Weve also bought a DubSport 16v conversion manifold which looks great!!!

Thats enough pics for the moment but I am just going to put the pics i first put on as i now know how!!

Please tell me what you think so far!!!

thats the engine bay painted up looks quite good for brush on job!!
Painted the brake servo and mastercylinder as well know. Try and get a pic up soon.

Nice one buddy, good to see your getting stuck in.
agree, looks like you're doing an awesome job there!!
Can't believe you're only 14, i'm doing the same thing but i'm double your age, i suppose it is quite a simple car to work on, i'm not 100% confident in what i'm doing but i'm learning a hell of a lot whilst doing it, even gonna attempt a clutch change tomorrow

good luck and keep updating, me likes pics

good luck with the clutch change!!

haha
haven't got any photos of progress but what weve done recently is removed the cams and tappets and taken the cylinder head off ready 2 fit new gaskets and cam chain.
Hoping to get that rebuilt over the next week or so.
Also ive been looking a round for fuel pump and regulator…anybody know a good pump for the carbed 16v??? :dontknow:
any help would be great
thanks

Cleaned up the surface for the new head gasket and checked the valves.

Cleaned up the top of the block and cleaned and checked the pistons

Fitted new genuine head gasket

Re-fitted the head on the block with new head bolts

Re-fitted and checked the tappets

So we are hopefully going to re-fit the cams and the new chain again after a little problem the first time!!

Also cleaned and painted the gearbox up…think it looks quite good (pics a bit hopeless but there we go)
Needs a wipe over (looks a lot better in person)

Also need to grind off the MK2 rear mount and fit the mk1 mount

So as i said next job is to finish off the engine bay and get some gromets for some holes here and there. Then service the carbs and drop the engine and gearbox in

hope you like it

ive been looking at the facet pumps cant decide between red top or silver!! haha probebly the red top and the malpassi regultor looks good.
Sorry for ll the question but do you know what jet sizes and chokes you are running.
My engine is a BRM170 16v conversion on weber 45's. does anyone think that this setup would work: 35mm chokes
145 main jets
180 air jets
50F11 idles
40 pumps
please help…this is the only thing holding the project up at the moment.
thanks
