To begin with, I have to tell that I'm from Sweden just in case anyone is wondering why my English is not the best!
Anyways, here we go!
INFO ABOUT THE CAR:
The car in question is in more definite form a Golf GTI from 1979
In its original condition in 1979 its color was black and the engien was a 1.6 liters 8 valve whit 110bhp/6000rpm and 140nm/5000rpm.
And it had a 4 speed gear box!
And the weight ended up at 950kg and 0-100 kmh went under 9 seconds according to wv
HISTORY:
In I998 my grandpa bought the car of an acquaintance and just after that he started to renovate some of the rust on the car, but a complete renovation where never a fact, and the car ended up standing in his garage for 2-3 years…
Then my little brother took over the car somewhere in the early 2000 - 2001..
But unfortunately there was not much more done to the car from his side either so it ended up just standing for him to!!
But after a bit of nagging i took over the car in late 2008 and then quickly rolled it home to my garage, and …
it ended up just standing for me to!! Until now!
The last inspection was in May 1989… so there is a little bit to work whit before it can roll again!
GOAL WITH THE CAR:
The main goal is to pick it back together again and maybe make it a bit more fun!
Then It will appear more exactly along the way how it all will work out in detail!
But with some reservations and some "may be", a "to-do-list" can look something like this:
ENGINE:
* Reconditioning the cylinder head and put in a more agresive cam shaft and a adjustable Cam Gear.
* "Powerrohr"
* 4-1 header.
* 2,5" sport exhaust.
* K&N panel filter.
* High Performance Ignition Wires and a msd blaster 2 coil.
* Change to breakerless ignition from a mk2.
* Do some engine balancing.
* Audi 100 2.3 5 cylinder throttle body.
* Warm up regulator from Saab 900 turbo.
* Lightning and balance the flywheel.
* 6 puck clutch disc whit high clamp pressure plate.
CHASSI & BRAKES:
* Coilovers.
* Polyurethane Bushings.
* Crossmember Reinforcement Bar.
* Seam welded wishbones, engine mounts and more.
* Convert from 239mm orginal discs to 280mm vr6 discs and calipers.
* Stainless Steel Braided Brake Hose Kit.
EXTERIOR:
* Paint the whole car.
* New Gti duck bill.
* Snowcap.
* New front and rear bumpers.
* Other lights around the car, maby black ones?
INTERIOR:
* Renovate and freshen up the old interior, maby some lite change.
WHEELS:
* Dont know yet.
AUDIO:
* Dont know this yet either but a CD/MP3 will be inserted anyway, at least!

The gearbox was a little dirty after 32 years
I originally planned to sack in a 5 speed gearbox from mk2 but i dont want to ruin the charm of running 4 gears!
And guess if some bolts had stuck!
But whit some cuting, strikes, drills and spraying wd-40 as a fool, everything will release!
Some rust….

At first, I was sitting and fiddling with a heat gun and a scraper but it took forever so i change to the rotating blast
on the drill instead, then it went a bit quicker!
I have also dismantled a bit more on the car ..
Underbody Mass was over 2 cm thick in some places..
And after too many hours it looked like this.
Luckily, i have a nice little brother who can help me! here with my daughter's fine ear muffs on! And yes, he had goggles on all the time except right here!
Then I threw out the interior to see how the floor looked like ..
The back seat is out, and my little brother seems to think it was comfortable to sit in anyway!…
And the front seats is also out! The entire interior will need a steam clean and a wet vacuuming to live again i think!
And under the carpet we found a small plastic mat :/
Guess if it was wet under it!
Out it went and look what i find under it …. RUST! hmm, I problably have to replace the whole floor! :/
I also ripped out all the electricity, etc. .. it will be fun to put everything back later…
And this is how it looks now.

Yes i hope it will be relatively good results in the end anyway!
But I will not rush with this project, it may take some extra time but I think it's worth it in the end!
This is the first Golf project for me so thats extra fun!

Im going to say no to changing the lights to black ones. I would say just keep it oem but alot lower!

Yes it has a little background in the family,
not since it was new but quite long history anyways!
And especially compared with my previous cars that had no history at all in the family or friends!
And about the lights, nothing is 100% sure yet how it will be in the end, It can be changed much until then

I have remov the spare wheel well completely instead of fixing the rust on it.
I will weld the hole later.

If you don't know already, where the black cloth on the sides of the seats has turned green, you can (or get a trimmer to) turn this inside out as it will be the same weave pattern on the inside but black and not faded by the sun

Hmmmmmmmmm… :/
Did anyone say water??!
It was a hell to get out the pistons!! They were stuck really good!
But in the end they came out! … by using a sledge hammer and a 2"2" piece of wood…
Feels like there may be will be some new pistons to :/

Sand blasted stuff.
First i primed with self etching primer from Eastwood and then i added Eastwood underhood black as a top coat!
Before and after:
I'm thinking about upgrade the brakes to calibra 16v 256mm instead of 280mm vw considering that i have that stuff in stock.
And then i also want to Upgrading the servo and master cylinder from a mk2,
so the servo, master cylinder and calipers on the picture above will probably not be used.
And since we are talking about brake upgrades, where can i get hold of M12x25 Shoulder Bolts
for the calibra brakes?
