well all depends on student budget really.

Would like to drop it a little lower (already dropped 20mm), possibly slot in a 1300 or 1500 for a bit more grunt and possibly some different alloy wheels….

Just see what come up on ebay and go from there!

my silver one is 40mm drop and looks good… I'd recommend that.. it's a bit of a hard ride but any lower and I think you'll have issues bud  :dontknow:

Yeah I was thinking of droppin it too somethin like 40mm so the ride isnt too bashy etc…also although the alloys are 14's i dont wana scrub em but make sure they are nicely tucked into the arches….

Don't suppose anybody knows how easy it is to slip a 1500cc engine in do they?

The biggest problem with getting the engine in the bay is that the 1.5 (1457cc) engines are big blocks so you need the drivers side engine mount changed and welded in.

I'm not sure about wiring but being carb-carb it might not bee too bad.

Fuel tank and lines are the same, not sure if you need a different radiator.

Then you may well want to upgrade the brakes to cope with the upgrade in power.

If you're going 4 to 5 speed on the garbox you'll need to change the rack becasue the 5 speed box has part of the linkage bracketry on there.

Could you please explain better because I'm soon going to change from 4 to 5 speed also and didn't know about this. Thanks

I thought I'd heard other people talking about a bracket on the rack for 5 speed linkages that the 4 speed didn't use, but now I can't find any mention of it. :dontknow:

I've neve rhad a 4 speed myself so I may be a little misinformed.

Back to the original point some people have used 1.3 engines from mk3 polo's.

They are an easier engine change and slightly newer than mk1 engines.

Some people get 1.3 engines from mk 3 polo GT, they are still a more simple option but are more popular and therefore more expensive and a little harder to find.

But what ever you do, I'd check your insurance first as it may have a significant impact on your premium.

Cheers for the info, tempted by a 1.3 from a golf tbh, and actually it didnt effect my premium as much as I'd thought…

scrap that - seems costs are just far too high for student budget. Don't suppose anyone knows any good methods of getting a few more horses from a 1.1?
