golf 1500gl 4door
Hello Im a new member, This is my golf.Sorry if my post is a bit muddled up.I posted it up first on the retro rides forum but thought that I should post here too.So to save a lot of time I have just copied and pasted my original thread
I got my Golf now about 4 weeks ago after doing a straight swap with a xbox 360, with my sisters, partners, brother. I had only paid ?160 for the xbox so thought that was a decent price if I had paid cash for the car.
Heres when I first got it
He give me a new wing too
The wheels used to belong to someone on here, I think it was derbydan.
The car itself is good. Its got some rust on the inner arches at the front and on the back wheelarches. It needs a tune up and the gear linkage needs doing, plus no mot or tax.Plus the biggest problem is that somehow I have ended up with 5 project cars.
The rest of the body work looks ok. So I am going to renew the rear arches, do the welding at the front and any other little bits that pop up, then I might give it a fresh coat of paint.
2 days after I got it home I made a start. Decided to tackle the front wing and inner wing first as I know that, hope that this is the worst rot on the car.
Started by taking of the bumper and straight away I could see that there was some filler at the bottom of the wing on the join with the front panel
No bolt at the bottom, held together with filler and rust
All the bolts came of very easy apart from the last one at the top.So I used this opportunity to try my new air cutter. It undid very easy as soon as I could get to it properly
Doesn't look that bad
There is a little hole
.
It will look worse before it gets better
I brought a new inner arch repair panel for the rot and 2 new rear wheelarches
So while waiting for them to be delivered, I brought a new gear bush kit as the gears were very sloppy. I brought the kit for a five speed golf because you get more bushes and you get the gear lever base.
Its all the same thou apart from the rods that are different. I could not find these but if I do I will buy them.
Took the whole linkage off and gave it a clean
I fitted the new bushes and gear lever base. Then it took me about 5 hours to get the gears working again. The alignment of the linkage has to be perfect, otherwise you just cant get the gears. The gears now work brilliant.
Then after waiting another day my new panels turned up.I could finaly start the inner wing.
After cutting that out, before I could fit the new panel I had to do some repair on the valance. I could have brought a complete new front panel but apart from the two edges its in good condition
Its not perfect yet but, needs a bit more work but Its a lot better then it was before.
Back to the inner arch, all hidden parts were cleaned up first and painted. Even if some paint gets burnt off when welding. Its better to have some then none
Finally welded in. I still need to weld a bit more and do the top of the arch, but the worst bit of rot on the whole car is now sorted I hope
More pictures soon

Finally another update after a long time.
Started on the front inner arch again. The top was rotted so I cut out the rot, cleaned it up and welded in some new metal
After finishing that I started on the rear wheel arch.
Sadly I didnt have any batteries for the camera so I could not get any pictures of the before and the inner arch rust but I did do the after.
This was just after I had repaired the inner arch
New arch welded on, I put seam sealer over the welds just to protect them until its finished
After doing that I moved onto some of the other problems.
First the suspension top mounts, They had both gone so I I had to replace them
OLD
NEW
I then renewed all the fuel hoses because they had all perished, I only found out after starting the car and finding fuel coming out all over the place. While changing these I also renewed the vacuum hoses and changed the fuel filter.
After getting the car running again I started on the drivers side front inner arch, I have also finished this now.
I will get some more pictures up tomorrow

Some more pictures.
The drivers front inner arch had some rot but it was not that bad so it was a easy fix
I then did a few smaller jobs like cleaning the windscreen washer tank

Some pictures of the inside. The floors and sills are very good apart from a small bit of rot in the front passenger side corner.
Heres the Rot. It looks like the cars been jacked up or hit a brick or something on the sill, causing a dent and a split in the join of the floor, inner sill and outer sill causing it to rot
There was also a 50p size hole on the drivers side. All this welding is also now repaired.
I have just got to do the drivers side rear arch now then I think all the welding is complete. Then I'm going to start getting it ready to paint
