Full Mk1 Restoration Project, Here We Go Again!

Here we go again

A little while ago I sold my unfinished Mk1 Golf Project, and Ive lasted all of 4 months since I bought another one haha

Its a pink(was red quite some time ago) 1983 Golf 1.1 C, Non Sunroof.

Its been sat in a field for nearly 2 years up in Aberystwyth, its in remarkably good condition, the last mk1 I had was more rust than car, but this one Im struggling to find a single hole.
Theres the odd patch of rust under the window seals but thats it!

Anyways time for some pics

The evening it was delivered…

Day 1

Day 2

You cant really see it too clearly in the picture but there is alot of water in the footwells haha

Found quite alot of this behind the dash, not really sure what it is??

Thats as far as I am with the car.

Ive also been making a rollover jig so I can get some good access to the underneath

Its coming together nicely
Gotta drill many many holes in the box section next, not looking forward to that at all!

Havn't really made much progress on the golf, just been stripping more and more bits from it.

Dash is gone, along with almost all the wiring, made a start on the front suspension but this is as far as I got

The jig is almost done though

The stuff you found behind the dash is where you have had mouse's living in there. will be remnants of some sort of nut/seed. Had same stuff in the bogey mk1

Made some progress recently, finished the jig off and got the car up in the air!

Thought about adding some strengthening to the jig but it seems pretty stable as it it, so i left it

Then spent a few hours with a wire brush attachment removing 30 years of dirt and underseal from the bottom of the car, most of which ended up on me, the ceiling of my garage, or on sticky lumps all over the garage floor. Thankfully most of it is gone now.

I then cracked open the red oxide and got to work

Popped to the shop and bought a can of stone chip just to see what it would be like, came out wonderfully.

Ive got 2 tiny holes to weld up by the rear beam mount and that it, loads more stone chip and some top coat. The colour i havnt decided yet.

Either black or the came colour as the body. Im leaning to body coloured because whats the point in going through the trouble of the jig, might aswell go all out and make it nice and shiny underneath! haha

Only problem then would be that i havnt decided what colour i want to paint the car yet haha

Plans for it are:
Full Restoration and Respray
Smoothed Bay with a 1.8/2.0 valver on bike carbs
Silly Lows
Nice set of wheels
And whatever take my fancy along the way haha

Coming along nicely. Thinking of getting mine up on a jig as well once i get it back and just get it cleaned up and looking nice and neat underneath as well.
Will be keeping a eye on your project. Good luck with the rest of the build.

Another 1.1 gutted

I'm about to start my restoration project on my 1.1 Formel E - it'll be staying completely original though.

The jig looks very handy!

Right, progress has been really slow, between getting a new job and moving into my first flat I haven't had much time for the mk1. However, things are starting to settle down and progress is being made!
The car is still up on the jig, but I've got me a donor car and have started to restore many many dirty greasy bits and make them like new!
The plan is when it comes to reassembly I can start with clean hands and finish with clean hands haha

Anyways enough talking….. PICS!

The Donor Car

Some Bits And Bobs

All painted up

Fitting some bushes, plenty or red oxides bits in the background though

A clue to the plans I have for it :D

Engine out of the donor car.. Only a 1.8 carb but it will do for a temp motor!

Picked these wheels up off my mate, don't look bad I think, yet again though, only temps!

I've seemed to have gotten some enthusiasm back for it so hopefully some progress shall be made

Cheers for looking, ill try and get some more updates on soon!!

I've made a bit more progress this weekend, finally got my wheel bearing removal too so I could start reassembly

This kit is awesome!

Modified a pair of pliers into a circlip removal tool

Small problem with the new inner track rods I bought…

The other wheel is straight…

It's for a mk1 golf they said…

Got 2 weeks off work soon so hopefully it will be back on the floor soon!!!!

Cheers
