Cabrio GTi Sportline- nearly there... (lots of pics)
Hi all,
I've been asking a lot of questions recently and thanks to you all I'm nearly finished the Sportline so I thought I'd put up some pics and get your opinions.
When I first bought it there had been some dubious modifications that I've now returned to standard. These included-
1. Lowered to within an inch of it life, with a horrible hard bouncy ride
2. Two blue (don't ask) fog lights below the front number plate
3. Neon lights underneath the front, back and sides of the car ala Fast & the Furious!
4. Leaky vinyl roof
5. Cracked dash from when the radio had been stolen
6. Neon tubing in the boot!
7. Kaput water pump
8. Wrong wheels
9. No Sportlne decals
10. Shrunken & moldy carpet (becuase of leaky roof)
11. Tinted (really dark- like black) rear lights-totally naff and smoked front and side indicators
12. Cracked and moss covered headlights
13. No tonneau cover
14. Busticated rear seat pull
However through the haze of bad taste modifications I could see a really nice little car so I've fixed all of the above and put it back to standard- it was abit of a struggle getting standard parts likes tail lights, springs etc. so many came from different sources- thanks to you all. I'm particularly pleased with the Sportline decals- cheers Walt!
I didn't keep it all standard though- the headlight wiring loom has made a massive difference to the light output and the red carpet from Newton Commercial really brightens up the interior. Keeping it VAG with the Symphony CD player meant I could use the original connections- literally plug and play. Although I uprated the speakers with JBL GTO's and fitted an electric aerial.
Now after a t-cut session and a coat of wax it looks like this-
Still got to source a cabrio centre console, replace the fuel pipe (not looking forward to that one), fix the back heavy stance, and put on the Karmann badges- but it's looking a lot better than 8 weeks ago!
Cheers,
Gregor

Sorry Funkstar- I forgot you took the lights!
Well spotted about the roof/window switches. I moved the roof switch to a spare space under the hazard switch (see pics) and the car has manual windows.
Reason I wanted to move the roof switch is because I'm planning on fitting 3 VDO gauges.
Fancy swapping your cabrio console for my tin-top one?
Cheers,
Gregor

Yeah, the tin top version has screw tabs in a different place. I guess it's because they don't have knee bars.
PM'd re side repeaters.

Gregor

?100 on eBay- I think someone has a job lot. Doesn't even need a cage! Simply fits in the dash using the existing connections.
Only (small) problem is that it lights up red, not green. I can live with that!

Holy Moses that is one sa-weeeeeet looking car. Well done!
Is the carpet hard to fit? Mine has shrunk ever so slightly around the front corners of the doors so are on my rather long to do list…

1989 MK1 VW Golf GTi Cabriolet, 'All White Edition' - currently having a new blue roof fitted. Yes it's not white but it requires less Cif to clean

The carpets were suprisingly easy to fit actually. Whilst I was in there I changed the insulation as well- all in cost ?170. Makes a huge difference visually and the car now smells new.
