2 litre powered!!!! ( lots of piccys)
2litre powered!!!!! 8)
put a 2e tall block in my mk1 gti.
took 4 days of blood sweat and tears. now tears of joy though!
basically did the work with a mate at his garage in cornwall, now ive just gotta run the beauty in! but it will be worth it after that.
the spec is a 2 ltr 2e tall block, with a ported polished gas flowed head with over sized valves, audi throttle body with matched inlet manifold, with a newman fast road cam and a wrapped exhaust downpipe. with a reconditioned bottom end.
after its run in im looking for some decent torque!!!!!!!! cant wait.
a very tired 1983 1.8 gti engine with 185000 miles under its belt
ready for extraction!
these ramps are a life saver! although very nerve wracking when the car is being lifted up by its sills!!!!
ready for removal
all gone!! the engine bay was then degreased and power washed
while the car was up in the air we notice this area where the steering rack support had come away from the chasis…………………….
proper job!!! all welded back together, then undersealed
2e block with oil cooler adaptor and blanking plate attached
bits n bobs now attached
oil pump with a mk3 gti baffles attached
wrapped exhaust.
we put 90 deg bends on the oil cooler to keep the pipes free of nasty angles and kinks
WUR mounted on blanking plate
the finished article!!!!! 8)
the trickiest part of the swap was changing the cog on the distributor. the pin which holds it in place must be made out of the hardest material know to this planet. but was good when it was done and in place.
i know i havent been able to drive it properly yet as ive only done 100 miles so far (3000 rpm so far!!), but the engine seems so much more solid and has a certain eagerness to it without having to rev it.
it sounds lush too, as anyone whos driven a cammed car will tell u, very distinctive.
anywho, cant wait till ive done 500 odd miles and i can start to slowly pick up the revs.
my plans are no more than 3500rpm for 500miles, then 4500 for a furhter 200 miles then 5500 for another 200 miles, then oil and filter change, take it easy for abit and then go for it. shouldnt have to rev it hard though, should have plenty of torque to play with.
anyhoo, im not gunna say im an expert, but if i can give any advice to anyone doing the same mod then i will be more than happy to help.
Cheers
Jon

clearance wise, im using a full stainless magnex system, there is no fouling of the exhaust to the body and bulkhead. the only place its catching is on the rear valance by the tailpipe, rattles abit when pulling away, which is already driving me crazy! apparently you can get a sandwich plate from tsr which fits in between the downpipe and the exhaust manifold, so im gunna get one of those, and hopefully it should do the trick.
but as i say, i think if you were running on a standard exhaust then i think you would be fine.

they said i should go for the tubular manifold they supply for 300 notes!!!
perhaps in the future, but for the moment i think i will try and source a sandwich plate!!
i have a spare gasket for the exhaust manifold/downpipe connection, so if the worst come to the worst then im sure i can get someone can make me up a 20mm plate to sit between them? should be cheap too?
Cheers

They list one for a mk1 4-1 for ?107.10 + vat waiting for the bumf to come through . If it looks ok i'm going to order one for mine as i'm not paying tsr prices either .
Hope the running in goes ok

should have some pretty decent torque figures, n thats what im interested in to be honest. but at a guess im gunna say 140+bhp and similar torque, say 150 lb/ft.
but i will scan in the info when i have it, so u guys can see.
Mr_GTI. we tried driving and pressing the pin out, but in the end we drilled it, took flipping ages though, theres some pretty hard metal in there!
then we pressed the new pin back in, was very satisfying when we had done it! make sure you put the drive wheel back the right way on!!!!

i had my RR tuned on 97ron fuel (which i always use) even tho it is now ?1.05 per LITRE in some places here.
anyway, figures r ok ish, my torque at the moment at just around 3k revs is 133 lb/ft, with a poor 113 bhp.
thats almost standard with the 2L in.
the figures you said are apparently true also as ive been told by more people again, doing the same mods.
So nice one speak to you soon

the car sounds awesome, and is alot more eager to go, even without having to put my foot down, gunna start picking up the revs abit now.
then an oil and filter change and away we go!
