1.3 Driver to 2.0 16v track car
I have been searching through this very useful forum for a good few weeks now gathering as much info as i can in regards to building this car, I must say you lot are very helpful and extremely knowledgeable in the ways of the MK1.
A few months ago the gaffa at work offered me a lovely looking Mk1 Driver that a customer at work didn't want back after an accident repair(god knows why!)
As you can see by the images the exterior of the car is in great condition considering the car had been stood in our compound for a good year or so,
However the underside of the car does have a little of the brown stuff to deal with!
As you can see the exterior of the car looks pretty damn good really.
AFter getting the vehicle in the air i thought it best to dig around and see how good the old girl really was
a couple of patches on the ns sill
A little crusty around the osr jack point
Hhhhmmm that doesn't look right ……
Ahhhh that makes sense
New panels please
Thats as far as i got last week looking at the body, but this Sat mornings job is to attack all the corrosion and see how much of the car is left standing.
SO this week i went to meet a chap who had a Seat 2.0 16 lump and 02a cable box(i think?) Plus a KR 16v head from a Mk2.
I am planning on using some ZX9r carbs i have in the garage from an old bike of mine to run the lump, this will hopefully make the wiring a little easier? As i am useless with wiring and the engine only came with a small part of the loom and no ecu's etc!
He had already started stripping the lump apart and left most thing labelled, its gunna be a bit of a jigsaw to put back together.
I will add more pics as and when i have time to work on her, but i will possibly be asking a few q's in relation to the engine and box. Bodywork wise i am ok with.

Just for you Neil by the looks
Started off by cleaning the oil and grime from the engine, then trying to suss out where all the parts bolted to the engine and match all the bolts up
Stripped the interior out
FOund a few more holes to deal with and a couple of old patches that need attention.
Time to start cutting and welding some good metal in
New OS axle mount panel offered up
And in
Couldn't resist treating the car to some Berg wings and rear arches…..

It's going to be a cracking MK1 when she's finished.
Good luck with it.

Yeah smudger i agree its not the worse cash of rust i have seen.
Cracked on a bit this week.
Engine out
Front inner wings checked over for corrosion, luckily enough theres hardly any 8)
Started plating up the drivers side rear arch
Fit drivers side complete chassis leg
And lower 1/4 section
Removed filler neck section(will be using an internal fuel tank)
Bonded rear arch in ready to smooth onto body
Then started on passenger side
View from by chair whilst having a well deserved coffee and biscuit break
NSR leg in
Thats about all i could fit in this last week, but more to come next week.
Cant really hang around as i want to use this on track in spring! i still have a million and one things to do and buy

But as the project is now in my home workshop, i should be able to crack on a little more.
Rear panel in
NSR arch slotted in and bonded
NSR inner arch welded up and treated to some lovely 3M 2k sealer, i must say that stuff is great but a little on the expensive side to use on the whole car as its only going to be used as a track hack.
Started filling and prepping the OSR 1/4 and filler neck area.
Before i could bring the project home i thought it best to strip all the old paint and filler off the old girl!
After a few Saturday afternoons and a couple of hours after work now and again the car was ready to come home
At last at home where she will stay until the engine is in and all the body is ready for paint…………may be a while
Next on the agenda is to start on the engine bay and sort the engine swap out.

Not 100% sure on the colour yet, but i am a sucker for Orange!
I'm thinking of the orange is used on my old van a few years ago, but with black accents?

Then removed the engine mount as this needs to be relocated towards the rear of the leg and flipping.
Cleaned off the sealer from the seams and de-rusting the bay.
Scuttle panel removed for a little smoother look and possibly aid the fitting of the roll cage
Next on the list was offering up the engine and box to see how the mount needed welding in
Then i realised that i had forgot one important part……….the new bloody engine mounts cf_emoticons__BangHead:That put an end to my bay work, so a quick look on ebay and a set of mounts were on order.
Finished off the day by etch priming the bare metal areas, as i will be a week or so until i get some more free time.
