I'm guessing your dizzy cap got all wet, did it?  If so, phone up VW and ask them if you can order a plastic distributor cap cover sleeve thing for an early Polo.  It's like a massive sandwich bag with elasticated ends.  Only cost me about a fiver I think, and it meant I never conked out again.
