That good old brake linkage - can it ever work well?

Hi all - so even after new braided lines, new discs, new pads  etc. The brake in the MK1 Convertible still feel sketchy, even for a car which is basically for pootling around in.

I see lots of posts about brake upgrades etc, which is fine, but I'm wondering if the next place should actually be a refurbished brake linkage? I see Crazy Quiff does them and I'm wondering if there is a big improvement with them, or the brakes remain as vague as ever? They're not 'cheap' but if they really do improve the situation and avoid going down the modified route (which I'd prefer not to), then it seems like a sensible next step.

Anyone fitted a refurbed linkage? Did it make a difference and was it worth doing or is it better to go a different route? Any other brake linkage options for consideration?

When driving can you lock up the front wheels?

hi, yes had new pads on rear drums and adjustment as part of the general over haul.
I suspect it will lock up (haven't tried to be honest) but there seems to be a lot of travel on the pedal for not a lot of bite on the brakes. Hence I wondered if a worn linkage could be wobbling around when under pressure and not putting all the pressure directly on the booster.

Don't compare the brakes with a modern car with ABS as they are all over the top as the ABS stops the front wheels locking up, the last thing you want is to lock up the front wheels when doing an emergency stop because some muppet has pulled out in front of you as when the wheels are locked up it takes longer to stop the car and you can’t steer….

What make of brake pads and disc did you have fitted?
I guess new brake fluid was used?

It does take a good 50 miles of use before the pads and shoes bed in.
