Do you mean in the actual rack, or just somewhere between the steering wheel and wheels?

I've just had my rack replaced, and there is still a little play somewhere.

Whip
/wip/
Noun - Car

When the steering wheel was first put into use in automobiles, it was called the whip. The term has now been generalised to classify any automobile.

there is an adjusting screw on the rack where the pinion and rack meet but usually if you take the play out when the wheels are straight ahead you find the rack binds on each lock (as there is less wear on the ends of the rack) . This then hinders the wheels straightening. It may also be the UJ's between the column and the rack causing the play. Aftermarket racks may need more turns from lock to lock and you may lose some turning circle.
I rebuilt my rack using a quaife quick rack which really suits the GTI as it makes it more responsive but at the expense of being slightly heavier when trying to park.
