Springs

Post

Hopefully just a quick question rather than a stupid one !!

Are all cabby springs the same - for instance, will springs from a clipper fit a GTI, did they change size/shape etc during production over the years ??

I've an 89 GTI cabby.

I'm currently on lowering springs with standard shocks which I find too uncomfortable, so am thinking of switching back to standard springs but want to ensure that when I find a set (second hand) I buy the correct ones.

Cheers

there were a few changes over the years which result in slightly different fitments, as long as you have all the right parts to match then yes you can use springs from different models.

just make sure they are cabrio gti springs, as non-gti and tintop will be different rating. try to get a complete setup that way you know you have all the parts you need, just replace the shocks and any rubber bits that have deteriorated.

main problem I had for my cab were rear shocks, I found the lower spring plate inner diameter changed at some point so the old ones wouldn't fit some new genuine vw shocks I bought, so I made sure the next set I bought had the lower plates included!

Hi John,

Fingers crossed I should be OK, there is a member on here who has kindly offered me a deal on a set of 89 cabby springs which in theory should fit like a glove. I'll hopefully be receiving these very soon - then the fun begins to switch over from the lowered springs to standard !!

It's worth fitting new bump stops, possibly the plastic covers as well and top mounts while it's all apart. There is 2 types of bump stop and plastic cover, you should have the mk2 type as listed in the link below.

Too right mate, the car as of the road for most of last year. I had to have a grands worth of welding which really knocked the stuffing out of me. I'm just starting to get around to a few jobs now so I can get it back on the road. I'm going to go back to standard springs  (picked up a set from a guy on the forum, just waiting for them to be delivered)
Ordered a full gear linkage refurb set as well so will have a crack at fitting that, plus the electrics are playing up so will need to get an auto electrician in to sort that out. Fingers crossed I'll be ready for the summer and a catch up !
Can't wait to see your tintop, looks mint in the photos.
