Rear drum brake sticking

Post

Hi All

I failed a recent MOT for a sticking rear drum brake.
i think while I'm fixing this I might refurbish both of these.

Is this an easy DIY job?  (Bearing in mind that I haven't done much with brakes before )
Are there any guides on here?

Thanks
Denis

Don't know about a guide on here but get a good manual or failing that a Haynes book of lies

Its pretty much bolt off - back on stuff.

Things to watch for;
  • Use axle stands not the spare wheel jack to hold up the car.
  • You have to remove the wheel bearing with the drum, but this gives you a chance to clean up, inspect and re-grease the bearing. Use a new split pin.
  • Use a pointy screw driver to release the 'self' adjuster wedge thru a bolt hole to remove the drum and then to pull the wedge down to manually adjust the brakes on reassembly. The self adjust never self adjusts.
  • Make notes of where all the springs, clips and bits and pieces go
  • To refit the hand brake cables it can help to slacken of the cables from inside the cab and then retighten when the brakes are reassembled.
  • To refit the shoes I assemble with all the springs, levers etc off the car, hook the top on the slave cylinder and using a big F-Off screwdriver lever over the lower mount
  • The slave cylinders can either seize solid or pee out brake fluid. This then means you may struggle to remove the small rusty Alllen head bolts holding them on or the metal brake pipe which may twist and shear off protesting at being disturbed for the 1st time in decades.
  • Bleed the system with some fresh fluid
  • I have had stickly rear brakes that were due to the rubber flexi hose collapsing internally and acting like a one way valve. Due to age/rust/seizure and tight access even with a ramp these can be a world of pain to replace
Good luck

Agreed - the Haynes covers it. I used a camera to photo each stage, especially the placement of springs, and the sequence of washers, wheel bearing etc.
