mk1 clutch help please....

My mk1 sits around unused at the moment - so every few months I take it for a drive round (not on the public roads of course).

Last time the clutch suddenly 'went', and wasn't engaging/disengaging properly.

Clutch has been heavy since I parked it up.

NB the cable seems to give full movement.

I'm guessing the release bearing isn't, or the springs have gone on the plate?

Questions:

1) what is the best clutch manufacturer for the mk1? Sachs?

2) Is there a clutch-change guide somewhere on here please?I tried doing a search but failed to find anything useful….

are you sure your bulkhead isn't split around the cable? if it was heavy it can break. this has happened on most of the golfs I have owned (9)

 if not the Haynes manual has guides on gearbox removal.
