What have I got?
I have a pair of Lucas 54 front calipers, but the part number doesn't seem to be right…
32323570/6
Searching comes up with Audi A4, so I am guessing they are wrong. The holes align with the Scirocco carriers I have, but the diameter of the holes in the calipers is smaller than that of the carriers. Is there a sleeve that is meant to go in between?
Any thoughts?

Just to be clear, the holes in the caliper are smaller than the holes in the slider assy fitted to the carriers…

Yep. The hole in the dark grey caliper is smaller than the hole in the silver carrier directly behind.
There seems to be a sleeve in the ETKA diagram (2).
I was wondering if that had something to do with it…

The diagram you have put up looks like mk1 golf, The 54 calipers that i have ever seen have a different sliding system to that, will try (again ) to put up a photo of mine…In fact i cannot see any sliders in your photo…

Thanks for the pic
Perhaps we are looking at something more like this…
That could account for the diameter difference.

Well I found these. They are probably for standard sized breaks, but they seemed to fit for testing…
And…
So the hole sizes are right. I guess I should scroll through some old threads to see whether they are for 256mm or 280mm.

Well I checked another thread
https://vwgolfmk1.org.uk/forum/index.php?page=topicview&id=technical%2Frunning-gear_2%2Fdifferences-between
I measure 70mm as opposed to 60mm which makes them 280mm. So how do I tell if my carriers are correct?
Looks like someone had some on a mk3…

Here's one to test your VW knowledge.
Now the shed is on the road I'v noticed a rather sticky front caliper. On inspection it needs a new piston. Trouble is, I need to identify the brakes in-order to get a recon kit or replacement.
However these are not your normal mk3 brakes; previous owner claims they came from a VR6.
The discs are vented 280mm diameter 22mm thick with a 4 stud pattern.
Caliper is a Lucas, stamped 54 with a possible part no. 32323570/5 with CN 5 stamped below long number.
So, any ideas? Would these be from a golf? corrado? or something else?
Or would a dealership be able to identify them from the part no?
Cheers

I don't think that there are factory carriers for the Mk1 that go bigger than 256mm.
You will need something like these to run those calipers

Thanks for the link.
So if I understand this right…
The Scirocco carriers are all the same.
There are two types of caliper, and I have the 280 type.
I can't use my calipers with 256 disks, so I need an additional adapter.

Not all the same as i understand it and i could well be wrong. Ignoring the much later scirocco, early ones are as mk1 golf, later models as are mk2 golf, then there is the 16 valve models which are as mk1 golf but have the 256 front brakes, so if they could be found would bolt onto mk1 golf..Its the carriers which are the magic bit…

As far as I know the Scirocco carriers are all the same, ie let you fit 256mm G54's to the Mk1. There were a much of early Audi models that use the same carrier - all getting hard to find now.
Using 280mm calipers with 256mm disks does not make sense as they are designed for a deeper disk.

Ah, I was meaning in terms of carriers for 54 calipers.
i.e. there aren't different types for 256mm compared to 280mm - it's the same carriers for 256 & 280 but the 280 need an offset bracket like the Epytek.
