Help needed: Gear Linkage Lubrication

Hi guys:
I just purchased this refurbish kit for my 1991 Cabby 1.8. It's very floppy and unprecise when shifting gears and it annoys the hell out of me .
I downloaded the pdf and read somewhere I need it would be wise with an extra set of hands.
My question is; should I lubricate anything?

 

Lubricate EVERYTHING.

I used High Temp Grease for all the bushes.

But the linkage rods I used HHS White Grease (PTFE).

You will find you will need a little grease to fit the bushes as they can be a little tricky to push home.
Smear some grease on the metal ball joints which the rods fit to and if you do change over the rods keep the old ones if they are genuine VW ones as you may find they are better quality than the new ones……
I still have the original rods fitted to my car after 270,000 miles and after fitting a new set of bushes and a little grease on the rod fittings I have very little play in the gear linkage.
There should be some foam gaskets which fit underneath the rods and over the ball joints, are they included with your kit?

Thanks for the tips and help! I actually took the car to the local vw dealership and they replaced all the parts today for a very nice and fair price. I honestly haven't got the time to fix it myself at the moment anyhow and the price I pay is well worth it.. Haven't picked up the car yet but I can wait to "feel" the "new" linkage.. :-) I'm sure the particular mechanic that worked on the car knows what to do and he said he did spend a good hour adjusting and getting it a 100%. He knows what parts to lubricate as he is known for his skills but thanks for the heads up mate! Much appreciated. I'm sure others will pick up on this and use that info.. Cheers.

If you can keep hold of the old gear linkage rods as I've know them pop off while driving and be lost on the road for ever or the replacement ones not be as good as genuine ones, it's handy to have them as spares.
